Quick Answer: A shipment from the USA to Colombia takes 3-5 business days by express courier, 5-8 days by consolidated air freight, and 4-14 days port to port by ocean. With AB Group Shipping, a 10 kg door-to-door courier box to Colombia starts at $226 (September 2026 quote) from Miami, Houston, New Jersey or Los Angeles.
- Express courier: 3-5 business days door to door to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Barranquilla. Air freight consolidated: 5-8 days. Ocean: 4-14 days port to port depending on your gateway.
- AB Group ocean transit, port to port: PortMiami 4 days, New York/New Jersey 6 days, Port Houston 10 days, Los Angeles/Long Beach 14 days. Your state decides your gateway, and your gateway decides your transit.
- Clearance speed depends on your documents — Factura Comercial, RUT/NIT, correct HS code — and on whether your shipment is selected for inspection.
- Prices in this article carry the month they were quoted; the live price table and the calculator on this page update themselves.
The question "cuánto tarda un envío a Colombia" has no single answer because three separate clocks run in sequence: origin handling, main transit, and clearance plus last-mile. This guide breaks each one down with real gateways, real Colombian cities and the rules DIAN actually applies.

Shipping from another state? Which port to read
Each port in the table is the one that cargo from these states usually leaves through. Miami: Florida. Houston: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. New Jersey: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia and West Virginia. Los Angeles: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii. Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama ship through Savannah; Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota ship through Chicago (rail); Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska ship through Seattle / Tacoma: those ports are not in the table yet. We pick up in every state, and the calculator finds the best port from your city.
How Long Does a Shipment to Colombia Take from the United States?
Quick Answer: A shipment from the USA to Colombia takes 3-5 business days by express courier, 5-8 days by consolidated air freight, and 4-14 days port to port by ocean freight, depending on your departure gateway. Add DIAN clearance and inland delivery to reach the receiver's door in your Colombian city.
Each shipping mode starts its clock at a different moment. A courier counts from the first hub scan. An ocean carrier counts from vessel departure, not from the day you drop the cargo at the warehouse.

The lanes behind those numbers are real and sail weekly. Miami→Cartagena is the shortest ocean leg in the corridor, followed by New York/New Jersey→Cartagena. Houston→Buenaventura and Los Angeles→Buenaventura serve Pacific-side cargo and run longer.
Air cargo lands at two main gateways. El Dorado (BOG) in Bogotá handles the bulk of import lift, with José María Córdova (MDE) serving Medellín and the Antioquia region.
PortMiami is the fastest ocean gateway to Colombia in the AB Group network as of September 2026. A 10 kg door-to-door courier box from Miami, Houston, New Jersey or Los Angeles started at $226 that same month. Rates change monthly — the live price table on this page updates itself.
How does the origin country change transit time to Colombia?
Origin changes everything. The United States is the fastest high-volume lane into Colombia because of daily air lift into Bogotá and short Caribbean sailings from Gulf and East Coast ports.
Spain runs longer by air than the USA. Most services connect through a European or Caribbean hub before reaching BOG. Ocean from Valencia or Algeciras is a multi-week transatlantic lane, not a Caribbean hop.
| Origin | Air transit (market range) | Ocean transit (market range) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 3-8 days | 4-14 days port to port | AB Group lane with live pricing |
| Canada | 4-9 days | Longer than US East Coast | AB Group lane with live pricing |
| Spain | Longer than USA; hub connections | Multi-week transatlantic | Valencia / Algeciras to Cartagena |
| Mexico | Short regional air | Short Caribbean / Gulf sailing | Veracruz and Manzanillo gateways |
| Panama | Same-region, very short | Shortest ocean lane to Cartagena | Colón FTZ consolidations |
| Chile | Regional air via hub | Pacific coastal to Buenaventura | Valparaíso sailings |
| China | Long-haul with hub transfer | Longest lane; often transships | Panama or Caribbean transshipment |
Only USA and Canada origins are AB Group lanes with live pricing on this page. For other origins, the ranges above are market references, not quotes.
Which US gateway will your cargo leave from?
Your state decides your port, and your port decides your transit. Florida ships through PortMiami. Texas and the central states route to Port Houston. California and the Southwest use Los Angeles/Long Beach.
- Northeast → Port of New York and New Jersey
- Southeast → Savannah
- Midwest → rail to the coast via Chicago
- Pacific Northwest → Seattle
- Ontario → Toronto; Quebec and the Atlantic provinces → Montreal; Western Canada → Vancouver
Any city not on that list uses the nearest listed origin, written as "approx." with the port it sails from. The calculator prices the exact origin ZIP, so you never guess.
How Long Does Ocean Freight from the USA to Colombia Take?
Quick Answer: Ocean freight to Colombia runs 4 days port to port from PortMiami, 6 days from New York/New Jersey, 10 days from Port Houston and 14 days from Los Angeles/Long Beach, based on AB Group transit as of September 2026. LCL adds consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination.
Those are vessel days only. They do not include trucking to the port, gate-in, clearance or inland delivery in Colombia.
| US gateway | Colombian port | Port-to-port days | Typical sailing frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| PortMiami (USMIA) | Cartagena (COCTG) | 4 | Multiple weekly |
| New York / New Jersey (USNYC) | Cartagena (COCTG) | 6 | Weekly |
| Port Houston (USHOU) | Cartagena / Buenaventura | 10 | Weekly |
| Los Angeles / Long Beach (USLAX) | Buenaventura (COBUN) | 14 | Weekly |
Coast matters. Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta serve Gulf and East Coast cargo fastest. Buenaventura on the Pacific usually suits West Coast shipments and cargo headed for Cali and the southwest.
LCL and FCL do not share the same calendar. LCL needs 2-4 days of CFS consolidation before the vessel loads, then 3-7 days of deconsolidation and cargo release after arrival. FCL moves straight to the terminal and straight out.
Volume decides which one you want. Below roughly 10 CBM, LCL normally beats FCL on cost per cubic meter. Above it, a 20' FCL is usually cheaper and releases faster at destination.
Vessel ETD is not your cutoff
Documentation cutoff and VGM cutoff fall before the vessel sails; the carrier sets the exact times on your booking. Miss either one and the carrier rolls your booking to the next sailing — a full week lost on a weekly service. Book your drayage against the cutoff date, never against the ETD.
Is Air or Ocean Faster to Colombia — and When Does Each Win?
Quick Answer: Air is faster, ocean is cheaper. Consolidated air freight reaches Bogotá or Medellín in 5-8 days; ocean takes 4-14 days port to port plus clearance and drayage. Small, urgent or high-value cargo belongs in the air; anything over roughly 2 CBM usually belongs on a vessel.
Air freight
Air moves on an Air Waybill (AWB) airport to airport, with daily departures into BOG and MDE. Pricing runs on chargeable weight, so density drives cost. Air wins for electronics, spare parts that stop a production line, samples before a trade show, and anything where a week of delay costs more than the freight bill.
Ocean freight
Ocean moves on a Bill of Lading (B/L) port to port, on weekly sailings. Pricing runs on volume or container, so bulky goods get cheap fast. Ocean wins for furniture, machinery, household moves, vehicles, and any commercial order where the buyer planned 30 days ahead instead of 3.
Chargeable weight explains most surprises. Air pricing usually takes volume as well as actual weight into account. A light, bulky box of pillows can price like a far heavier shipment, which flips the math toward ocean immediately.
Transit is only part of the door-to-door total. Express courier parcels and air freight clear under different modalities than ocean cargo, which changes how fast the receiver actually holds the goods. Our USA to Central America International Courier: Customs Requirements & Compliance Guide shows how courier compliance compares across the region.

Go to the calculator →How Long Does Express Courier from the USA to Colombia Take?
Quick Answer: Express courier from the USA to Colombia takes 3-5 business days door to door to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Barranquilla. Economy and deferred air services run 6-12 business days. Business days exclude weekends, US holidays and Colombia's festivos.
Here is how the courier clock actually runs:
- Pickup or drop-off — the box enters the network, but the clock only starts at the first hub scan.
- Origin hub processing — sorting and export documentation, usually overnight.
- Export flight — direct lift into BOG or MDE on most US gateways.
- Arrival and clearance — the courier files the declaration with DIAN at destination.
- Last-mile delivery — same-week delivery in main cities, longer in extended zones.
Cutoff times decide your first scan. A box tendered after the daily cutoff starts its clock the next business day, not that afternoon. Three hours late at drop-off can cost you a full day of transit.

Tracking statuses decoded
"In transit" means the box is moving normally. "Customs clearance in progress" / en trámite aduanero means the declaration is filed and under review — nothing to do. "Held in customs" / retenido en aduana means customs needs a document, a payment or an inspection. "Delivery exception" usually means a bad address or an absent receiver, not a customs problem.
Document readiness is the single biggest lever on courier clearance speed anywhere in the Andean region. Our free courier documents calculator for USA to Peru 2026 shows exactly how that works in practice.
What is a transit business day, and how does it differ from a calendar day?
A transit business day is a working weekday counted at both origin and destination. It skips Saturdays, Sundays, US federal holidays and Colombian festivos.
The math catches people out. A 4-business-day quote tendered Thursday afternoon usually lands the following Wednesday, not Monday. Colombia moves many festivos to Monday, which stacks a long weekend into the middle of a short transit.
Never compare the two systems directly. Ocean carriers quote calendar days for port-to-port transit; couriers quote business days. A "10 day" ocean transit and a "10 day" courier service are not the same promise.
How Long Does Door-to-Door Delivery Take by Colombian City?
Quick Answer: After clearance, inland delivery adds about 1-2 days to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Barranquilla; 2-4 days to Bucaramanga, Pereira, Manizales, Cúcuta and Ibagué; and 4-8 days to extended zones such as Leticia, San Andrés, Quibdó and Guajira municipalities, where carriers apply remote-area surcharges.
| Destination | Tier | Added days after clearance | Surcharge note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bogotá, Medellín, Cali | Main city | 1-2 | None typical |
| Barranquilla, Cartagena | Main city | 1-2 | None typical |
| Bucaramanga, Pereira, Manizales, Armenia | Intermediate | 2-4 | Scheduled line-haul, not daily |
| Santa Marta, Villavicencio, Cúcuta, Ibagué | Intermediate | 2-4 | Scheduled line-haul |
| Quibdó, Guajira municipalities | Extended | 4-8 | Remote-area surcharge applies |
| Leticia, Mitú, Puerto Carreño | Extended | 4-8 | Remote access; surcharge applies |
| San Andrés | Extended / island | 4-8 | Separate island customs regime |
Main cities move on daily line-haul from Bogotá, so cargo released Tuesday is usually delivered by Thursday. Intermediate cities run scheduled, not daily, service — missing the truck costs you two days.
Extended zones are a different animal. Leticia has no road connection to other municipalities, and its cargo depends largely on river transport on the Amazon (Superintendencia de Transporte). San Andrés operates under its own customs regime as an island territory.
Inland delivery is not AB Group freight
Our ocean quotes are port to port. Inland trucking inside Colombia, destination handling and remote-area surcharges are billed separately by the local carrier or your agencia de aduanas. Confirm the final delivery cost with them before you commit to a delivery date with your receiver.

Go to the calculator →How Long Does DIAN Customs Clearance Take, and Why Is My Package Held?
Quick Answer: Clearance time varies by shipment. A shipment is released once the import declaration, the Factura Comercial and the importer's RUT/NIT match the cargo, and once inspection — if the shipment is selected — is completed. Decreto 659 de 2024 modified the advance import declaration rules of Decreto 1165 de 2019.
The authority is DIAN — Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales. Per DIAN's regulatory framework, Decreto 659 de 2024 partially modified the general customs regime set out in Decreto 1165 de 2019, specifically on advance import declarations.
One naming point that still trips up importers: customs brokers are no longer called "SIA". Under Decreto 1165 de 2019, articles 34 and 36, they are agencias de aduanas, authorized by DIAN in levels 1 to 4. Use one for anything beyond a simple courier parcel.
On taxes and thresholds, we stay in our lane. Colombia applies IVA and arancel on imports, and operates a régimen de envíos urgentes modality for couriers. Confirm current rates, caps and thresholds with a licensed agencia de aduanas or with us before you buy or ship — these figures change and we will not guess at them in a blog post.
What you control is paperwork. These documents shorten clearance:
- Factura Comercial with real, defensible values — not a handwritten estimate
- Correct HS code classification for every line item
- The receiver's cédula or NIT, plus a valid RUT for commercial imports
- A packing list that matches the invoice piece for piece
- The proof of origin the trade agreement requires (a certificate or a declaration of origin, depending on the agreement; Decreto 1165 de 2019, art. 177) when claiming preference
Undervaluing is the #1 cause of holds
An invoice that says "gifts — $50" on a box of electronics is the fastest way to sit in inspection. Vague descriptions like "personal items" or "machine parts" do the same. Declare real values and describe each item specifically. The twenty minutes you spend on the invoice saves days at destination.
What does "retenido en aduana" or "en trámite aduanero" actually mean?
En trámite aduanero means the declaration is filed and under review. This is normal and usually requires nothing from the receiver.
Retenido en aduana is different. Customs stopped the shipment pending documents, a value review, a physical inspection or a payment. Something is open and someone must answer it.
- Contact the courier's Colombian clearance desk the same day
- Confirm the RUT, NIT and cédula on file match the receiver exactly
- Pay any assessed taxes without waiting for a second notice
- Respond to the document request within 24 hours — each delay restarts the queue
No broker can promise a release date. An honest one tells you which requirement is still open, and nothing more.
What are the 10 most common causes of delay to Colombia?
From thousands of shipments processed across the USA–Latin America corridor, the same failures repeat:
- Wrong or missing HS code on the commercial invoice.
- Undervalued or handwritten Factura Comercial.
- Missing RUT, NIT or cédula for the consignee.
- Missing proof of origin when claiming trade preference.
- Missing or incorrect AES/EEI export filing, required when a Schedule B line exceeds $2,500.
- Missed documentation or VGM cutoff, rolling the booking a full week.
- Peak-season capacity — pre-Christmas, Black Friday volume, pre-Chinese New Year.
- Inspection-triggering goods: lithium batteries, cosmetics, supplements, food, medical items, drones, firearm parts.
- Branded goods that look counterfeit without proof of purchase.
- Remote-area delivery plus festivos stacking onto the end of the chain.
Prevention is a lead-time question. Book courier same day, air freight 2-3 days ahead, LCL 5-7 days before the sailing, FCL 7-10 days.
How Do Incoterms Change Your Delivery Date to Colombia?
Quick Answer: Incoterms 2020 decide who files and pays at each step, and filing speed decides your delivery date. DDP puts more of the steps on the seller, so the receiver usually waits less; who can clear and pay in Colombia depends on the importer of record, so confirm it with a licensed agencia de aduanas. EXW is slowest, because nothing moves until the buyer appoints a forwarder at origin.
| Incoterm | Who clears in Colombia | Who pays IVA & arancel | Typical added days |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXW | Buyer | Buyer | +3-7 (origin coordination) |
| FCA | Buyer | Buyer | +1-3 |
| FOB | Buyer | Buyer | +1-2 |
| CIF | Buyer | Buyer | +1-2 |
| DAP | Buyer | Buyer, on arrival | +1-2 (payment step) |
| DDP | Seller, as agreed | Seller, as agreed | Depends on the importer of record |
DDP looks attractive on paper. It also exposes the seller to Colombian import-side liability and requires an importer of record with a valid RUT/NIT. That requirement is behind a large share of stalled e-commerce parcels into Colombia.
DAP is the safer middle ground. The receiver pays taxes on arrival, which adds a day or two, but it keeps the seller clear of Colombian tax obligations.
On the ocean lane, CIF does not speed anything up. It only shifts who books and insures the main carriage — the vessel sails at the same time either way.
Pro Tip: buy FOB if you care about dates
An FOB buyer appoints the forwarder and therefore picks the sailing. That is where real days are won. Under CIF, the seller books the cheapest service available — often a transshipment routing through Caucedo or Kingston that adds a week over a direct Caribbean sailing.
How Long Do Household Goods and a Car Take to Colombia?
Quick Answer: Household goods and vehicles ride the same ocean transit as general cargo: 4 days from PortMiami, 6 from New York/New Jersey, 10 from Port Houston and 14 from Los Angeles/Long Beach (AB Group, September 2026). Add packing, loading, clearance and inland delivery to your Colombian city.
A full move runs on a longer calendar than the sailing suggests. Plan 4-8 weeks door to door, and book ahead in summer and December.
- Survey and booking — confirm volume and container size.
- Packing and loading — 1-2 days at the residence.
- Gate-in before cutoff — not before ETD.
- Sailing — 4-14 days depending on your gateway.
- Clearance and delivery — handled by your agencia de aduanas.
Returning Colombians have a specific exemption route. Under Ley 1565, the menaje cap is 2,400 UVT — COP 125,697,600 in 2026, at a UVT of COP 52,374 set by Resolución DIAN 000238 of 15 December 2025.
The paperwork runs through two bodies. The beneficiary certificate comes from the Comisión Intersectorial para el Retorno (CIR), after registering in the Registro Único de Retornados with the Cancillería. Consulates issue the certificado de residencia and certificado de menaje.
The menaje doméstico articles 279-285 of Decreto 1165 de 2019 are unamended in DIAN's own compilation, which carries changes up to Decreto 218 de 2026 (DIAN normograma, read October 2026). Anything else about eligibility, item lists or quantity limits: confirm it with us or a licensed agencia de aduanas before you pack.
Vehicles and oversized equipment
Cars and motorcycles ship by container or RoRo on the same sailings. A car alone prices on the vehicle line of the calculator; cars sharing a 40' use the shared-container approximation per car, always written "approx.". RVs, motorhomes, semi-trucks, heavy machinery and aircraft do not fit a container — they move on flat rack or RoRo, and a specialist quotes them after the calculator takes your request.
On the US side, CBP Form 3299 is for personal effects entering the United States, not leaving it; an export shipment needs an AES/EEI filing when a Schedule B line exceeds $2,500. Our complete guide to moving abroad from the USA walks through the full export-side checklist.
What Does Your Colombia Shipment Cost, and How Do You Book the Fastest Option?
Quick Answer: Price and transit move together: both depend on your origin gateway, the mode, the chargeable weight or volume, and the destination city in Colombia. A 10 kg door-to-door courier box to Colombia started at $226 with AB Group in September 2026. Live pricing sits in the calculator on this page.
Know what a quote covers. Our ocean quotes on this lane are port to port. Origin THC, BAF/CAF, destination handling, Colombian taxes and inland delivery are separate line items, not hidden inside the freight rate.
"All-in" quotes hide days as well as dollars. A cheap rate on a transshipment service via Caucedo or Kingston can add a week over a direct Caribbean sailing from Miami. Always ask for the routing, not just the number.
Booking lead times by mode as of 2026: courier same day, air freight 2-3 days, LCL 5-7 days before the sailing, FCL 7-10 days, household moves and vehicles 2-4 weeks. Late bookings do not get faster service — they get the next sailing.
Import duties and taxes are not AB Group charges. DIAN sets them. Confirm current rates and thresholds with a licensed agencia de aduanas or an international tax specialist before you buy or ship.

Express courier takes 3-5 business days door to door to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Barranquilla, and 6-12 business days on economy air services. Ocean freight runs 4-14 days port to port depending on whether your cargo leaves from Miami, New York/New Jersey, Houston or Los Angeles. Add DIAN clearance and inland delivery to reach the final address.
Clearance time varies by shipment — DIAN releases a shipment once the declaration, the Factura Comercial and the receiver's RUT or NIT match the cargo, and once any selected inspection is finished. Complete, correctly classified paperwork is what moves a parcel quickly. For anything beyond a simple courier box, work with a DIAN-authorized agencia de aduanas (Decreto 1165 de 2019, arts. 34 and 36).
Air is faster. Consolidated air freight reaches Bogotá or Medellín in about 5-8 days and express courier in 3-5 business days, while ocean freight takes 4-14 days port to port plus clearance and inland delivery. Ocean still wins on cost for anything bulky — use the calculator on this page to compare both for your exact cargo.
A parcel shows as "retenido en aduana" when customs needs something: a clearer invoice, the receiver's cédula or RUT, a value review, a physical inspection or a tax payment. Nobody can promise a release date, because the clock restarts each time a requirement is answered. Contact the clearance desk the same day, send the missing document and pay any assessed taxes to shorten the hold.
Air shipments from Spain to Colombia usually take longer than from the USA because most services connect through a European or Caribbean hub, and ocean from Valencia or Algeciras is a multi-week lane. Price per kilo depends on chargeable weight, mode and destination city, not on distance alone. AB Group prices USA and Canada origins live in the calculator on this page.
