Quick Answer: A USA–Mexico land freight quote is built from five cost blocks: linehaul, fuel surcharge, border transfer, customs clearance and accessorials. FTL from Laredo to Mexico City moves in 2-3 transit days door to door; Los Angeles to Guadalajara takes 5-7. The calculator on this page prices your exact origin ZIP and Mexican CP in seconds.
- Cross-border truck freight is almost never one carrier: a US carrier runs to the border, a transfer tractor crosses it, and a Mexican carrier runs the final leg — three invoices inside one price.
- FTL wins above roughly 10-12 standard pallets; below that, LTL (carga consolidada) prices per pallet and usually beats a full 53' dry van.
- A formal import clears on a pedimento, filed by the importer personally or through a licensed agente aduanal (Ley Aduanera art. 40), with a Complemento Carta Porte on the Mexican leg; commercial importers generally need an RFC and padrón de importadores registration, so confirm your consignee's case with a licensed customs agent.
- Under USMCA there is no certificate of origin form — nine data elements on the invoice prove origin and can take qualifying US goods to 0% IGI, but IVA at 16% still applies on import.
Most shippers compare a US domestic truck rate against a Mexican one and get a nasty surprise at the invoice stage. The gap sits in the middle: the border transfer, the pedimento, and the accessorials that only exist on this corridor.

Go to the calculator →How do I calculate land freight from the USA to Mexico?
Quick Answer: Calculate land freight to Mexico by adding five blocks: linehaul (distance × rate per mile), fuel surcharge, border transfer, customs clearance, and accessorials. Enter your origin ZIP code, Mexican destination CP, equipment type, weight and pallet count, and the calculator returns a cross-border price in seconds.
Every calculadora flete terrestre usa mexico works from the same five inputs. Get those right and the estimate lands close to the final invoice.
- Origin ZIP code — sets the US linehaul distance and the border crossing the load should use
- Destination CP (código postal) — sets the Mexican linehaul and whether the zone carries a surcharge
- Equipment type — 53' dry van, 48' caja, reefer or flatbed, each with its own rate per mile
- Chargeable weight — the greater of actual or dimensional weight on LTL
- Pallet or linear-foot count — drives whether FTL or LTL prices better
Chargeable weight catches people out on LTL. Carriers rate on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. A pallet of foam insulation weighs 120 lb but occupies the deck space of a 1,200 lb pallet. You pay for the space.
Commercial value is an input too, not an afterthought. It sets your cargo insurance premium, usually quoted as 0.3% to 0.6% of declared value. It also becomes the customs value for duty and IVA.
Pro Tip
Ask whether the number you received is an all-in cross-border rate or a US-side rate only. Plenty of quotes stop at the border yard in Laredo. The Mexican linehaul and the transfer then arrive as a second invoice, often a substantial share of the total.
What is cross-border trucking (flete terrestre transfronterizo)?
Cross-border trucking is road freight that starts in the USA or Canada, crosses a land port of entry, and gets delivered inside Mexico under a Mexican carrier's operating authority. It is not US domestic LTL with extra miles.
Three things change at the bridge: the carrier, the paperwork, and the legal regime. Your US bill of lading stops mattering. The pedimento and the Complemento Carta Porte take over. That is why a serious transporte de carga de usa a méxico estimate prices three legs, not one.
How accurate is an instant online estimate?
Instant estimates are reliable for standard dry freight on named lanes. Laredo to Monterrey, El Paso to Chihuahua, Otay Mesa to Tijuana — these move thousands of trucks weekly and the pricing is well mapped.
Request a firm quote instead when you ship hazardous goods, flatbed or out-of-gauge loads, reefer with temperature recording, or high-value cargo that needs custodia armada.
Prices move after booking for four reasons: reweigh, reclass, detention, and border inspection delays. The first two are avoidable with accurate paperwork.
How much does it cost to ship a truckload from the United States to Mexico?
Quick Answer: The price of a truckload to Mexico depends on distance, lane balance, equipment and crossing point. Linehaul is quoted per mile, the fuel surcharge rides on top, and the border transfer plus customs clearance are separate line items. Enter your lane in the calculator on this page for a live 2026 number.
Here is the formula every forwarder uses, spelled out:
- Linehaul — distance × rate per mile, quoted separately for the US leg and the Mexican leg
- Add the fuel surcharge — a percentage of linehaul, typically 15-30% depending on diesel index
- Add the border transfer — a fixed drayage charge at Laredo, Otay Mesa or your crossing
- Add agente aduanal and pedimento fees — brokerage, prevalidation and the DTA
- Add accessorials — detention, estadía, custodia armada, liftgate, reconsignment
- Add cargo insurance — a percentage of declared commercial value
Lane balance moves price more than most shippers expect. A loaded southbound run into a region with thin northbound freight carries a repositioning cost baked into the rate. Monterrey and the Bajío have balanced flows. Secondary destinations in Chiapas or Yucatán do not.
A single door-to-door number hides three separately priced legs. That is why quotes for the same lane can vary widely between forwarders — some include the Mexican delivery, some stop at the border yard.
Truck is not always the right mode for this corridor. For heavy, non-urgent freight moving to a Mexican seaport city, ocean container often prices better per kilogram. Our quoting system shows a 20 ft container at $1,577 and a 40 ft HC at $1,814 on the USA–Mexico lane, checked September 28, 2026. For a small urgent shipment, a 10 kg courier box runs $134.
Mexican duties, IVA and the DTA are not AB Group freight charges. Budget them separately as landed cost. Mixing them into your freight comparison will make every mode look wrong.
Shipping a vehicle on this corridor follows different rules and different paperwork. Our Car Shipping to Mexico Calculator: 7-Day Transit 2026 covers that side in detail.

Go to the calculator →What is the border transfer and why do three carriers touch your load?
Quick Answer: The transfer is the short drayage move that carries a trailer from a US yard, across the international bridge, into a Mexican yard. A US carrier runs the linehaul, a transfer tractor crosses, and a Mexican carrier delivers. Each leg has its own rate, and the transfer is a fixed line item.
The transfer (cruce de frontera) is a 2-5 mile move. A licensed transfer operator hooks your trailer in the US yard, crosses the bridge, and drops it in a Mexican yard on the other side. The tractor never leaves the border zone.
Direct door-to-door with one tractor is rare for three reasons: cabotage restrictions, insurance coverage limits, and cross-border driver authority. Each country limits which carriers may haul freight inside it, so the interior legs normally go to carriers authorized in that country.
The crossing itself usually takes 1-3 hours when the paperwork is in order. Then comes modulación. Your load goes through the semáforo fiscal: green releases without inspection, red triggers a physical inspection, per the Ley Aduanera (DOF 19-11-2025).
The pedimento must beat the trailer to the border
If the trailer arrives at the border yard before the agente aduanal has filed, the trailer sits. Yard storage and trailer interchange charges start accruing. This is the single most common avoidable cost on the lane. Pre-file the pedimento, match the commercial invoice line-for-line to the packing list, and confirm the Carta Porte before the trailer leaves your dock.
Keeping transfer costs down is mostly about sequencing. Send documents to your customs agent 48 hours before pickup, not when the truck is already rolling toward pedimento y cruce en laredo.
What is the difference between FTL and LTL for cross-border shipping to Mexico?
Quick Answer: FTL means you buy the whole trailer and pay one lane rate regardless of how full it is. LTL (carga consolidada) prices per pallet and shares the trailer with other shippers. FTL usually wins above 10-12 standard pallets; below that, LTL is cheaper but adds consolidation days.
Mode comparison: USA–Mexico corridor
See the data
| Mode | Transit days | Minimum volume | Best use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTL (carga completa) | 2-6 | 10+ pallets | Fragile, high-value, time-critical |
| LTL (carga consolidada) | 5-8 | 1 pallet | Small, well-packaged, non-urgent |
| Ocean container | 8-18 | Full container | Heavy freight to port cities |
| Air express / courier | 1-4 | None | Samples, parts, urgent documents |
Source: AB Group Shipping lane operations, USA–Mexico corridor · 2026
The break-even math is simple. Compare the full-trailer lane rate against the per-pallet rate multiplied by your pallet count. Then weigh FTL's faster transit and lower handling risk.
FTL (carga completa)
One seal from your dock to the consignee. No cross-dock, no deconsolidation at the border. The trailer is yours even at 60% capacity. This is the right call for fragile goods, electronics and anything above $50,000 declared value. Transit is the shortest available by road.
LTL (carga consolidada)
You pay per pallet and share the trailer. Freight gets handled at origin cross-dock, again at the border, and again before final delivery. That is three touch points of damage risk. Check accessorial exposure before you book — liftgate, residential delivery and limited-access charges stack fast.
The same volume logic governs ocean freight, where the threshold sits around 10 CBM instead of 10 pallets. Our breakdown of USA-Latin America FCL vs LCL: The 10 CBM Breakpoint walks through that calculation.
Which equipment and weight limits apply in Mexico?
Four equipment types cover most cross-border freight: the 53' dry van, the 48' caja, the reefer, and the flatbed for out-of-gauge or steel. Note that 53' access is restricted on some Mexican secondary roads and in older industrial zones.
Mexico's federal weight and dimension standard governs axle configuration and gross vehicle weight. Confirm the exact limits for your configuration with your carrier or licensed agente aduanal before loading.
Here is the trap: a load that is perfectly legal in the United States can be over-axle in Mexico after the trailer swap. The Mexican tractor has a different axle spread. Correcting that means re-loading at the border yard, which costs labor, time and yard storage.

Go to the calculator →Which border crossing is cheapest for shipping to Monterrey?
Quick Answer: Laredo–Nuevo Laredo is the cheapest and fastest gateway to Monterrey for most shippers: it handles the highest truck volume in the corridor and sits roughly 140 miles from the city. Otay Mesa, El Paso, Pharr, Nogales and Eagle Pass each serve different destination markets and change both price and transit.
| Crossing | Relative truck volume | Transfer handling | Best destination markets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laredo–Nuevo Laredo | Highest in the corridor | Deep transfer capacity, many operators | Monterrey, Saltillo, Mexico City, Bajío |
| Otay Mesa–Tijuana | High | Strong, maquila-focused | Tijuana, Baja California, Guadalajara |
| El Paso–Ciudad Juárez | High | Good, manufacturing-driven | Chihuahua, Durango, Torreón |
| Pharr–Reynosa | Medium-high | Reefer and produce specialists | Gulf coast, Querétaro, produce lanes |
| Nogales | Medium | Seasonal reefer capacity | Sonora, Sinaloa, Hermosillo |
| Eagle Pass–Piedras Negras | Medium | Lighter, useful as overflow | Coahuila, Monterrey alternative |
Match the crossing to the destination, not to the shortest drive. Laredo serves Monterrey, Saltillo, Mexico City and the Bajío. Otay Mesa serves Tijuana and Baja. El Paso serves Chihuahua and Durango. Pharr handles Gulf-bound and produce freight. Nogales covers Sonora and Sinaloa.
Your US origin usually sets the crossing by default:
- Texas and the central states → Laredo or Eagle Pass
- California and the Southwest → Otay Mesa or Nogales
- The Southeast and Northeast → Laredo, after a longer US linehaul
- The Midwest → Laredo or El Paso, depending on destination
- Canada (Ontario, Quebec, Western provinces) → Laredo after a long-haul run, or Otay Mesa from British Columbia
Shortest is not always cheapest
A shorter linehaul to a congested crossing can cost more than a longer run to a fluid one. Add up yard storage, detention and the risk of a missed delivery appointment. We route origins across the USA and Canada, and the calculator picks the gateway that prices best for your ZIP.
How many days does a truck take from Laredo to Mexico City?
Quick Answer: A truck from Laredo to Mexico City takes about 2-3 business days door to door once the pedimento is cleared. Add 1-3 days for US linehaul to the border and 1-2 days for consolidation on LTL. Red-light inspections and incomplete paperwork are the main causes of delay.
FTL transit by lane, border to door
See the data
| Lane | FTL transit (business days) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Laredo → Monterrey | 1-2 | About 140 miles, shortest interior run |
| Laredo → Mexico City | 2-3 | Highest-volume interior lane |
| Otay Mesa → Tijuana | 1 | Same-day delivery common |
| Otay Mesa → Guadalajara | 3-4 | Long Mexican linehaul |
| El Paso → Chihuahua | 1-2 | Manufacturing corridor |
| Pharr → Querétaro | 2-3 | Heavy reefer and produce traffic |

The transit clock has four milestones, not one. Pickup day, border arrival, customs clearance, and Mexican delivery are separate events. A quote that gives you one number is averaging across all four.
LTL transit runs longer for structural reasons. Freight cross-docks at origin, waits for consolidation at the border, then gets deconsolidated before final delivery. Expect 5-8 business days door to door on typical consolidated lanes.
Four periods stretch transit predictably: the pre-Christmas retail push, Mexican holiday weeks, Semana Santa, and produce season at Pharr and Nogales. Build slack into those windows.

What documents do I need to send freight by truck to Mexico?
Quick Answer: Mexican formal import requires a commercial invoice, bill of lading, packing list, USMCA certification where claimed, and NOM certificates or permits where required, all declared on a pedimento filed by the importer or a licensed agente aduanal (Ley Aduanera art. 40). A commercial consignee generally needs an RFC and padrón de importadores registration before the trailer reaches the border; confirm with a licensed customs agent.
The pedimento is Mexico's customs declaration. Its completion is governed by Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026 (SAT/DOF, 15 January 2026). SAT can seize formally imported merchandise lacking a pedimento, even years later during an audit, under the Ley Aduanera (DOF 19-11-2025).
- Commercial invoice (factura comercial) — must match the packing list line for line
- Bill of lading — the transport document for the leg presented at the border
- Packing list — piece counts, weights and dimensions
- USMCA certification — where origin is claimed, with the goods description and 6-digit HS tariff classification (trade.gov, USMCA Day One)
- NOM certificates or permits — where required by the tariff classification
- Pedimento — filed by the importer or its agente aduanal, governed by Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026
Check the importer's RFC and padrón status
For a commercial formal import, SAT generally requires the importer's RFC and registration in the padrón de importadores, as of October 2026. Exceptions exist: courier shipments, where the courier declares its own RFC if the buyer gives none, and a menaje de casa. If your buyer needs registration and is not registered, the shipment cannot clear — regardless of how clean the rest of the file is. Verify registration before you quote the sale, not after the trailer is loaded.
Mexico classifies imports with an 8-digit fracción arancelaria plus a 2-digit NICO, whose first six digits are the HS code, declared on the pedimento (SNICE, Secretaría de Economía). Classification drives everything downstream: the IGI rate, permit requirements, and NOM applicability.
COFEPRIS, SENASICA and SEMARNAT may require import permits depending on the tariff classification (USDA FAS, FAIRS Mexico MX2024-0047). Food, cosmetics, medical devices, agricultural goods and regulated chemicals all have their own channels.
The Complemento Carta Porte travels with the Mexican leg as part of the carrier's CFDI. Confirm the exact current version and data fields with your agente aduanal before dispatch — the specification has been revised repeatedly.

Which Incoterm should you use for road freight to Mexico?
Quick Answer: EXW, FCA, DAP and DDP each move a different block of cost into the quote. FCA and DAP are the practical choices for cross-border trucking. DDP looks simple but makes the US seller responsible for the pedimento, the IGI and the 16% IVA on the Mexican side.
| Incoterm 2020 | Linehaul | Border transfer | Mexican duties + IVA | Final delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EXW | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
| FCA | Buyer (after handover) | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
| DAP | Seller | Seller | Buyer | Seller |
| DDP | Seller | Seller | Seller | Seller |
Why DAP works
The seller controls the freight and delivers to the buyer's door, but the Mexican importer of record files the pedimento and pays the IGI and IVA. Your buyer already has the RFC and the padrón registration. The risk stays where the registration is.
Why DDP is a trap
Under DDP the seller carries the Mexican import, the IGI and the 16% IVA. Whether a foreign seller can act as importer or recover that IVA depends on its Mexican tax setup — confirm with a licensed agente aduanal before agreeing to it. You also take on full exposure to classification disputes. DDP reads clean on a purchase order and bleeds on the P&L.
Under USMCA there is no certificate of origin form. Nine data elements prove origin and may sit on the commercial invoice (trade.gov, USMCA Day One). The certification must carry the goods description and the 6-digit HS classification.
Budget these tax items separately from freight:
- IVA at 16% on the customs value plus the import duty and other charges payable on import (Ley del IVA art. 27)
- The northern-border 8% IVA stimulus does not apply to imports — imports pay the general rate in every case (Decreto DOF 31-12-2018)
- DTA at 8 per thousand of customs value on an ordinary import (Ley Federal de Derechos art. 49)
- Electronic prevalidation of each pedimento at MXN 350.00 plus IVA (RGCE 2026 rule 1.8.3)
IGI depends on the tariff classification of each item. US-originating goods certified under USMCA can enter at 0% IGI (trade.gov, Mexico – Import Tariffs, 9 February 2026). Confirm your fracción with a licensed agente aduanal before you price the sale.
Mexico calculates IGI on customs value, equal to FOB price plus freight and insurance to the Mexican border (Ley Aduanera, DOF 19-11-2025). Your freight cost feeds the tax base — one more reason to get the lane priced correctly from the start. Go to the calculator →What accessorial charges show up on a Mexico trucking invoice?
Quick Answer: Accessorials are the charges outside linehaul: detention, estadía at border yards, custodia armada on theft-risk corridors, scanner and inspection fees, liftgate, and cargo insurance priced as a percentage of declared value. They are the main reason a booked rate and a final invoice differ.
Learn the vocabulary before you book:
- Detención / estadía — waiting time at pickup, delivery or the border yard
- Border yard storage — accrues when the pedimento is not ready on arrival
- Reclassification — the carrier re-rates after reweigh or re-measure
- Liftgate — no dock at destination
- Residential or limited-access delivery — common on LTL to secondary Mexican cities
- Reconsignment — the destination changes after dispatch
Custodia armada is the one that surprises US shippers. It is an armed escort used on high-theft corridors and for high-value loads. It is quoted per trip, and your cargo insurer sometimes requires it as a condition of coverage. Factor it into the landed cost before you accept the order.
Declare the real value
Cargo insurance is rated on declared commercial value, not on the freight charge. Under-declaring to save premium produces a partial claim payout if something happens. The saving is a few hundred dollars. The exposure is the full value of the load.
Inspection costs are operational, not fixed. A red-light physical inspection ties up the trailer and can trigger yard charges. Build schedule slack rather than assuming a fixed number of lost days — nobody can promise you one.
Ask for the accessorial schedule in writing before booking. The calculator shows what is included in the rate and what gets quoted separately.

Go to the calculator →How do you use the USA–Mexico land freight calculator on this page?
Quick Answer: Enter your US or Canadian origin ZIP, the Mexican destination CP, cargo weight, dimensions or pallet count, and equipment type. The calculator returns a cross-border price in seconds, with no signup and no follow-up calls. Switch between FTL and LTL to see the break-even point for your exact volume.
- Enter your origin — the ZIP code sets the US linehaul and suggests the crossing
- Enter the destination CP — the Mexican código postal sets the interior linehaul
- Enter weight and dimensions — or the pallet count if you ship standardized units
- Pick the equipment — 53' dry van, 48' caja, reefer or flatbed
- Declare the commercial value — this drives the cargo insurance line
- Compare FTL against LTL — the break-even shows up immediately
Worked example one. A 14-pallet shipment of industrial fasteners from a Dallas-area ZIP, crossing at Laredo, delivering to a Monterrey CP. Fourteen pallets sits above the break-even, so FTL in a 53' dry van prices better than per-pallet LTL. Transit runs 2-3 business days door to door with a clean pedimento.
Worked example two. A 4-pallet shipment of packaged consumer goods from a San Diego County ZIP, crossing at Otay Mesa, delivering to Guadalajara. Four pallets is well below break-even, so LTL consolidada wins on cost. Expect 5-7 business days, since the freight waits for a consolidation.
Compare modes in one sitting. Truck against a 20 ft or 40 ft HC ocean container for heavy freight to a port city, or courier for small urgent parcels. The calculator switches between them without restarting.
When a specialist takes over
The calculator hands off to our team for hazardous goods, flatbed and out-of-gauge loads, heavy machinery, and temperature-controlled pharma. Heavy machinery in particular requires a pedimento and, in certain cases, a prior permit (SNICE, Secretaría de Economía, DOF 2 April 2026). You submit the request through the same form.

Go to the calculator →Add five cost blocks: linehaul based on distance and equipment, fuel surcharge, border transfer, customs clearance by a licensed agente aduanal, and accessorials such as detention or custodia armada. The fastest method is to enter your origin ZIP, Mexican CP, weight and pallet count into the calculator on this page, which prices all three legs at once. Duties and the 16% IVA are landed-cost items and are not part of the freight rate.
FTL means you buy the entire trailer and pay one lane rate no matter how full it is; LTL (carga consolidada) prices per pallet and shares the trailer with other shippers. FTL usually becomes cheaper above roughly 10-12 standard pallets and moves faster because there is no cross-dock or deconsolidation. LTL suits small, non-urgent, well-packaged freight that can absorb one to three extra days.
About 2-3 business days door to door once the pedimento has cleared and the trailer has crossed. Add one to three days for the US linehaul from your origin to Laredo, and another one to two days if you ship LTL and the freight waits for consolidation. A red-light physical inspection or a mismatch between invoice and packing list is the usual cause of delay.
Mexico's formal import requires a commercial invoice, bill of lading, packing list, USMCA certification where origin is claimed, and NOM certificates or permits where required, all declared on a pedimento, which the importer may file personally or through a licensed agente aduanal (Ley Aduanera art. 40). For commercial imports the consignee generally needs an RFC and padrón de importadores registration with SAT; courier shipments and menaje de casa are exceptions, so confirm your case with a licensed customs agent. The Mexican carrier's invoice also carries the Complemento Carta Porte — confirm the current version with your customs agent.
Laredo–Nuevo Laredo is normally the cheapest and fastest gateway to Monterrey because it handles the heaviest truck volume in the corridor and sits only about 140 miles from the city. Eagle Pass–Piedras Negras can work as an alternative when Laredo is congested. Your US origin matters too: a California shipper may still price better through Otay Mesa even with a longer Mexican linehaul.
