Pre-shipment checklist

What to do before drop-off.

Quarter tank of fuel only
IMO regulation. We drain to 1/4 if you arrive higher — fee may apply.
No personal items inside
Vehicles are sealed by carriers as empty. Loose items risk seizure or refusal. Spare tire and OEM tools are OK.
Disable alarms and toll tags
Active alarms trigger inspections. Remove EZ-Pass/Sunpass/Telepass to avoid mid-ocean charges.
Original title + photo ID
For US export: title submitted to CBP 72 hours pre-loading via AES/EEI filing. Lien-release letter if financed.
No leaks, working battery
Vehicles must drive on/off under their own power for RoRo. Non-runners → container or flat rack.
Pre-shipment photo dossier
Our origin team photographs all sides + interior + VIN at intake. Condition baseline for insurance.
Wash and steam-clean undercarriage
Mandatory for Australia, NZ — quarantine inspection failures are at-cost reroute.
Document weight + dimensions
L × W × H and curb weight drive lane assignment and customs valuation.
Forbidden inside the vehicle

Don't pack these.

  • Loose cargo of any kind (boxes, bags, household goods)
  • Aerosols, flammables, paints, propane, lithium batteries (beyond OEM)
  • Firearms, ammunition, weapons of any kind
  • Currency over $10,000 equivalent (must be declared separately)
  • Perishables, plants, untreated wood, soil on tires or undercarriage
  • Hazardous waste, asbestos brake parts (Australia)
  • Counterfeit goods or unmarked aftermarket airbags
Glossary

Shipping vocabulary, decoded.

The acronym soup you'll see in your quote, BOL, and customs filings — translated into plain English.

RoRoRoll-on / Roll-off

Specialized vessel where vehicles drive on at origin and off at destination. Cheapest and most common method for running passenger vehicles.

FOBFree On Board

Incoterm where seller covers all costs until cargo is loaded on the vessel. Risk transfers to the buyer at the ship's rail.

CIFCost, Insurance, Freight

Seller pays freight and insurance to destination port. Most common for personal vehicle shipping arrangements.

B/LBill of Lading

Title document issued by the carrier. Original B/L is required to claim the vehicle at destination.

AES/EEIAutomated Export System / Electronic Export Information

US Customs filing required for all vehicle exports. Must be submitted 72 hours before vessel sailing.

ITNInternal Transaction Number

Confirmation number issued by CBP once AES filing is accepted. Required on the B/L for vessel loading.

BAFBunker Adjustment Factor

Fuel surcharge added to ocean freight rates. Adjusted monthly based on bunker fuel index.

25-year rule25-year exemption (US)

Vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from EPA and DOT/NHTSA conformity rules. The cornerstone of US JDM and gray-market imports.

VINVehicle Identification Number

17-character chassis ID. Photographed at intake and verified against title before export filing.

NMVTISNational Motor Vehicle Title Information System

US salvage/total-loss database. Title brand history is checked before any export filing.

Whether the container belongs to you or the line. Most personal vehicle shipments use COC.

FAQ

20 questions, real answers.

Everything we get asked about cost, time, paperwork, EVs, classics, auction cars, and the 25-year rule.

It depends on the route, the vehicle and the method. RoRo is usually the cheapest way to ship a running car, a container of your own costs more, and air freight costs several times more than ocean. Rates move every month, so we do not publish a fixed price list here: the calculator above gives you the exact rate for your lane and vehicle in 60 seconds, and our car shipping guides by country (below) show the current prices from Miami, Houston, New Jersey and Los Angeles.
RoRo is cheapest and fastest for a running, registered, mass-market vehicle. Choose a container if (a) the destination doesn't accept RoRo, (b) the vehicle is a classic, exotic, or modified, (c) you need to ship spare parts or wheels alongside, (d) the vehicle is non-running, or (e) theft risk at destination port is elevated. A 20ft container fits one sedan; a 40ft fits two sedans or one larger SUV/pickup plus parts.
Port-to-port: 8–14 days US East Coast to Caribbean or Northern Europe, 12–22 days transatlantic, 22–38 days to West Africa or Middle East, 28–46 days to Oceania or East Africa. Add 5–10 days each side for inland trucking, customs clearance, and destination registration paperwork. Air freight is 3–6 days port-to-port.
Yes — exclusively via enclosed 20ft or 40ft container with custom bracing, four-point soft-tie strapping, and engine-bay shrouds. Climate-controlled containers available on premium lanes. We work with collectors, concours organizers, auction houses (Gooding, RM Sotheby's, Bonhams) and movie productions. All-risk agreed-value marine insurance up to $10M per vehicle.
Yes, if the vehicle is 25 years or older from the date of manufacture, under the EPA/DOT 25-year exemption rule — no emissions or safety conformity required. Younger JDM cars need Registered Importer (RI) modification through an EPA-listed RI, which is expensive and limited to vehicles on the eligibility list. We handle title, customs entry (HTS 8703), and CBP release at any US port.
RoRo vehicles are driven on by trained loaders, chocked, and four-point lashed to the deck — they don't move. Cargo damage rates on RoRo are below 0.4% across the industry; ours is 0.18% on a three-year rolling basis. Container shipments are essentially zero-damage when properly braced. All shipments are eligible for all-risk marine insurance covering damage, theft and total loss.
Send us the lot number and gate pass; we collect from the auction yard, store at our origin CFS until enough vehicles are ready for the lane, then load and ship. Title is held in escrow and released to the buyer at destination. We handle EAD (Electronic Auto Dealer) filings and dealer-broker handoffs for licensed exporters.
Original title (with all liens released), photo ID, bill of sale (if recent transfer), power of attorney if shipper isn't the titled owner, and a completed Shipper's Letter of Instruction. We file AES/EEI with CBP, secure the ITN, and the original title is presented at the port 72 hours before loading per US Customs regulations.
Officially, no — and we strongly recommend against it. Ocean carriers seal vehicles as empty, and loose items are grounds for refusal at the port, customs holds at destination, or insurance voiding. The only exception is a spare tire, OEM tools, child seat, and one set of floor mats. For household goods, see our International Moves service.
Yes. We coordinate origin pickup (flat-bed or driven), inland trucking to the port, ocean transit, destination customs clearance, and final delivery to your address. Pickup and delivery are priced by the inland distance on each side; choose them in the calculator and they are added to your rate.
Standard carrier liability is included ($500/package, per Hague-Visby) — which is functionally nothing for a vehicle. We offer all-risk agreed-value marine insurance at 1.6–2.4% of declared value, with claims paid within 21 days of documentation. For collector vehicles above $250k, we bind specialty cover through Hagerty, Lloyd's syndicates, or your existing carrier.
A Carnet is a temporary import document allowing duty-free entry for up to 12 months — used for motorsport teams, film productions, tradeshows, and demonstration vehicles. The vehicle must be re-exported within the validity period or duty becomes payable. We issue carnets through the US Council for International Business (USCIB) and equivalent issuing bodies abroad.
Yes — but not via RoRo. Non-running vehicles ship in a sole-use container with a winch-and-push loading at origin CFS, or on a flat rack if oversized. Expect an extra handling charge over a standard container rate; the calculator flags it and a specialist confirms it with your quote.
EVs and hybrids ship normally via RoRo or container with state-of-charge limited to 30% per IMO IMDG Class 9 regulations (UN 3480/3481). Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, BYD, NIO, Polestar — all handled routinely. Some lanes restrict EV stowage to specific decks; our booking team confirms feasibility before quoting.
We hold approved-vendor status for US State Department, several EU embassies, and major NGOs. Diplomatic shipments use sealed containers, expedited customs lanes, and POV-specific documentation (DD Form 788 for military, SF-91 for State). Duty exemptions filed against the receiving mission.
Yes. Motorcycles ship palletized and crated inside a shared 40ft container — typically 4–6 motorcycles per container, priced per bike depending on the lane (the calculator prices motorcycles too). ATVs and snowmobiles ship the same way or via RoRo if they can be loaded on a flat. Boats up to 8m on a trailer go RoRo; longer boats need a flat rack.
Under US Federal law (49 CFR § 591.5(i)), motor vehicles 25 years or older from the date of manufacture are exempt from FMVSS (DOT) safety conformity. The EPA exemption is 21 years. Together they form the "25-year rule" that allows gray-market imports of Nissan Skylines, Toyota Hilux, Lancia Delta, Honda Beat, and countless other models barred from new sale in the US.
Up to 8m LOA on a trailer — RoRo or container. 8–14m → flat rack with cradle. Larger yachts → semi-submersible heavy-lift (Sevenstar, Peters & May class). We handle cradle engineering, USCG documentation, and destination cruising-permit filings.
Yes. AB Group Shipping is an NVOCC (FMC OTI License #023815NF), C-TPAT Tier-II validated, IATA-certified for air freight, holds CBP customs bond #91500218, and IMO-compliant for hazardous-materials shipping including Class 9 lithium batteries.
