Quick Answer: Chile charges 6% ad valorem duty on the CIF value, plus 19% IVA on CIF plus duty, per Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Only unused vehicles may be imported under Ley 18.483; returning Chileans are the main exception. With AB Group Shipping, Miami to San Antonio costs from $2,220 port to port (September 2026 quote, 24 days).
- Article 21 of Ley 18.483 (Estatuto Automotriz) allows only unused vehicles to be imported into Chile. Used motorcycles are prohibited. Antique and classic cars get no exception either, per the 2014 Aduanas legal report.
- Chilean adults who lived abroad 18 months or more, without interruption, and return for good may import one vehicle — new or used — paying all duties and taxes except the used-goods surcharge.
- The tax math is fixed and public: CIF = FOB + ocean freight + insurance; 6% duty on CIF; 19% IVA on (CIF + duty). Where an authorized import involves used goods, duties carry an extra 50% surcharge.
- Ocean freight is the one part you can price right now. Use the table under this answer and the calculator on this page for your exact origin, then run the 6% + 19% math on top.
Most searches for a calculadora impuestos auto chile start with the tax rate and end in a dead end at the legal question. Read the eligibility rules first, then the math — because a car you cannot legally import never gets taxed at all.

Can You Legally Import a Used Car Into Chile in 2026?
Quick Answer: No, not under the general import regime. Article 21 of Ley 18.483 (Estatuto Automotriz) permits only unused vehicles. Used motorcycle imports are prohibited outright. Chilean Customs confirmed in 2014 that antique and historic vehicles are not covered by the article 21 exceptions, so the used-car ban applies to them too.
Chile is one of the strictest markets in Latin America on this point. Ley 18.483 art. 21 allows only unused (new) vehicles as the general rule, according to the Informe Subdirección Jurídica of the Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. That single line kills most US auction plans before they start.
Used motorcycle imports are banned outright. If you are browsing Copart or a Craigslist listing for a 2019 bike, stop there. The import of used motorcycles into Chile is prohibited under the same article.
There is also no 30-year classic-car regime in Chile. The 2014 Aduanas ruling reversed Informe N° 29 of 2011 and applied the ban to antique and historic vehicles. A 1968 Mustang gets the same answer as a 2021 pickup.
What about electric and hybrid cars?
No age-limit exemption exists for electric or hybrid vehicles. People repeat this one often, and it is wrong. The only electric-specific exception is used trolleybuses with more than 18 seats, per the same Aduanas legal report.
Hybrids get no 10-year window either. Article 21 bans used vehicle imports in general, with exceptions only for special-purpose vehicles and Section 0 or duty-exempt regimes.
Which vehicles escape the ban?
Paragraph 2 of article 21 exempts ambulances, fire engines and other special-purpose vehicles from the ban. No age limit attaches to that exemption — Chile does not set a 5-year cap for emergency vehicles, contrary to what several forums claim.
Confirm eligibility before you buy the car
Anything about eligibility outside the rules published by Servicio Nacional de Aduanas must be confirmed with a licensed agente de aduanas before you pay for a vehicle. A car that arrives at San Antonio without a legal import route becomes a storage bill, not an asset. AB Group Shipping is a freight forwarder, not a customs agent or legal counsel.
Chile Car Import Tax Calculator 2026: How the 6% + 19% Math Works
Quick Answer: Chile's vehicle tax math has two layers. First, 6% ad valorem duty on the customs value (CIF = cost + insurance + freight). Then 19% IVA applied to CIF plus the duty already calculated. Both rates come from Servicio Nacional de Aduanas and apply to the vehicle's declared customs value, not its US sticker price.
Start with CIF. CIF = FOB value of the vehicle + international ocean freight + marine insurance. That total is the taxable base Aduanas works from. Your US purchase price alone is not the base.
Insurance is not a clearance requirement. If you present no insurance certificate or invoice, Customs estimates the premium at 2% of the FOB value when building the CIF figure. That rule sits in Chapter 3 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras.
Next comes the stacking order, and it matters. IVA is charged on CIF plus duty, never on CIF alone. That is why the effective tax load lands above 25% of CIF, not at 25% flat.
A 6% duty followed by 19% IVA on CIF plus duty produces an effective load of about 26.14% of the CIF value (1.06 × 1.19 = 1.2614). Per Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, both rates apply to the declared customs value — which already includes your ocean freight.
The 50% surcharge on used goods
Where an authorized import involves used goods, duties carry an additional 50% surcharge. On a 6% duty, that means an effective 9% instead of 6%, under Arancel Aduanero, Regla General Complementaria N° 3.
Returning Chileans importing under the retorno definitivo regime pay all duties and taxes except that used-goods surcharge. That exemption is specific and narrow. It does not waive the duty or the IVA.
One more structural point people miss: vehicles are never part of the menaje de casa franchise. They have their own regime under Arancel Aduanero Partida 00.33 and Ley 18.483 art. 21. Partida 0009 travellers' goods are exempt from the 50% surcharge, but a car is not travellers' goods.

Go to the calculator →Worked Example: Full Landed Cost From the USA to San Antonio
Quick Answer: A $18,000 vehicle shipped from Miami at $2,220 (September 2026 quote) with insurance estimated at 2% of FOB gives a CIF of $20,580. Duty at 6% is $1,234.80. IVA at 19% on $21,814.80 is $4,144.81. Total Chilean duty and IVA: $5,379.61.
Here is the full sequence. Every calculadora impuestos auto chile you find online runs some version of this math — the difference is whether the freight number is real.
- Set the FOB vehicle value: $18,000 from your purchase invoice.
- Add ocean freight: $2,220 port to port, Miami to San Antonio, 24 days transit (AB Group Shipping, September 2026 quote, one vehicle in its own 20 ft container).
- Add insurance: $360, using the 2% of FOB estimate Customs applies when no policy is presented.
- Calculate CIF: $18,000 + $2,220 + $360 = $20,580.
- Apply 6% duty: $20,580 × 0.06 = $1,234.80.
- Build the IVA base: $20,580 + $1,234.80 = $21,814.80.
- Apply 19% IVA: $21,814.80 × 0.19 = $4,144.81.
- Total Chilean duty and IVA: $5,379.61.
Total outlay including the vehicle and the freight comes to about $25,959.61. That figure is before agente de aduanas fees, port storage and domestic transport inside Chile. Those three are real and they are not small.
What moves this number
Three variables swing the result. A higher FOB raises every layer. A more expensive gateway — Los Angeles instead of Miami — pushes CIF up before any tax is applied. And an authorized used-goods import carrying the 50% duty surcharge turns $1,234.80 of duty into $1,852.20.
Pro Tip: freight is inside the taxable base
Because ocean freight sits inside CIF, every dollar you save on shipping saves you about another 26 cents in Chilean duty and IVA. A RoRo booking at approx. $1,350 from Miami instead of $2,220 in a dedicated container cuts roughly $227 off the tax bill on top of the $870 freight saving. Run your own origin through the calculator on this page before you finalize the math.

Go to the calculator →Who Qualifies for an Exemption or a Special Regime?
Quick Answer: Chilean adults who lived abroad 18 months or more, continuously, and return for good may import one vehicle — new or used — paying all customs duties and taxes except the used-goods surcharge, per Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Vehicles are never covered by the menaje de casa franchise, which is a separate household-goods regime.
The retorno definitivo route is the main legal path for a used car. The conditions are specific. You must be a Chilean adult, have stayed abroad 18 months or more without interruption, and return to live in Chile permanently.
Under that regime you may import one single vehicle, new or used. You still pay the 6% duty and the 19% IVA. The exemption covers only the surcharge that applies to used goods. The import must still be processed through an Agente de Aduanas.
The menaje de casa franchise is separate
Household goods move under a different regime entirely — Partida 0009.04. Chileans who stayed abroad more than 6 months and return for good may bring menaje de casa and útiles de trabajo without paying duty or IVA, up to a value cap.
| Time abroad | FOB cap (US$) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months to 1 year | $675 | Menaje de casa |
| More than 1 to 5 years | $4,050 | Menaje and/or work tools |
| More than 5 years | $6,750 | Menaje and/or work tools |
Those caps last changed on 1 April 2023 under Decreto Exento 97 de Hacienda, a 35% uplift. The next five-year update is due in 2028. Planning a full move alongside the car? Our Moving to Chile Cost Calculator: Instant Quotes (2026) prices the household goods side.
The goods must be used, come from the country where you lived, have been bought before your return, and carry no commercial character. They should enter with the beneficiary or within 120 days before or after their date of entry. A Director Regional or Administrador de Aduana may extend that term once, in qualified cases.
No consulate certifies anything in this process
Proof of time abroad is the certificado de viajes issued by the Policía de Investigaciones de Chile (PDI). Disability franchises, diplomatic regimes and free-zone benefits sit outside the rules published above — do not assume a rate or a cap for them. Confirm your specific case with a licensed agente de aduanas before shipping.
New vs. Authorized Used vs. Returning-Resident Import: Tax Comparison
Quick Answer: A new vehicle pays 6% duty on CIF plus 19% IVA on CIF plus duty. An authorized import of used goods adds a 50% surcharge on the duties that apply. A returning Chilean under the retorno regime pays the duty and IVA but is exempt from that used-goods surcharge.
The table below is the whole picture in one screen. Note the fourth row: there is no tax column for used motorcycles because there is no legal import.
| Import route | Legal basis | Duty | IVA | Taxable base | Who may use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New (unused) vehicle | Ley 18.483 art. 21 | 6% on CIF | 19% | CIF + duty | Any importer |
| Authorized used-goods import | Regla General Complementaria N° 3 | 6% + 50% surcharge = 9% | 19% | CIF + duty | Only where the import is authorized |
| Returning-resident vehicle | Retorno definitivo, Aduanas | 6% on CIF, no surcharge | 19% | CIF + duty | Chilean adult, 18+ months abroad, uninterrupted |

Chile's structure
Flat and predictable. One duty rate, one IVA rate, no age-based brackets. The hard part is not the math — it is proving you have a legal route for the vehicle at all.

Go to the calculator →Which Port and Shipping Method Should You Use?
Quick Answer: Most US vehicle shipments to Chile arrive at San Antonio, with Valparaíso and Iquique as alternates. A vehicle in its own 20 ft container from Miami runs $2,220 port to port, 24 days (September 2026 quote). RoRo is cheaper; a shared 40 ft container splits the cost between two to four cars.
Your gateway depends on where the car sits today. Florida and the Southeast move through PortMiami. Texas and the central states through Port Houston. The Northeast through New York/New Jersey. California and the Southwest through Los Angeles/Long Beach. Midwest cargo rails to the nearest coastal gateway.
| Origin gateway | Own 20 ft container (Sep 2026) | Ocean transit to San Antonio |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | $2,220 | 24 days |
| Houston | $2,537 | 32 days |
| New Jersey | $2,220 | 14 days |
| Los Angeles | $2,720 | 29 days |
Those are port-to-port prices for one vehicle in its own 20 ft container. The price is the container, so a sedan, an SUV, a pickup or a motorcycle costs the same.
RoRo and shared container options
RoRo is not quoted by our system, so treat these as approximations: Miami approx. $1,350 · Houston approx. $1,500 · New Jersey approx. $1,350 · Los Angeles approx. $1,650. A shared 40 ft container with 2–4 vehicles runs, per car: Miami approx. $1,550 · Houston approx. $1,800 · New Jersey approx. $1,550 · Los Angeles approx. $1,900.
Pro Tip: method choice changes the tax bill
Freight sits inside CIF. A RoRo booking from Miami at approx. $1,350 instead of $2,220 in a dedicated container reduces CIF by $870 — and cuts duty and IVA by roughly $227. The trade-off is handling: a container is sealed, while on RoRo personal items may not travel inside the vehicle.
Free-zone routings through Iquique, Arica or Punta Arenas carry their own registration and use conditions. Those rules sit outside what Aduanas publishes on the general regime, so confirm rates and eligibility with a licensed agente de aduanas before booking.
RVs, motorhomes, semi-trucks and heavy machinery do not fit in a container. They move on flat rack or RoRo vessels, and a specialist quotes them after your request comes through the calculator.

Go to the calculator →What Documents Does Chilean Customs Require for a Vehicle?
Quick Answer: Every vehicle import into Chile must be processed through an Agente de Aduanas and declared on a DIN (Declaración de Ingreso), regulated in Annex 18 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras. Homologation with the Ministerio de Transportes is mandatory, and SAG performs phytosanitary inspection of imported vehicles.
The core file is short but unforgiving. Miss one piece and the car sits at the terminal collecting storage.
- DIN (Declaración de Ingreso) — filed by your agent, regulated in Annex 18 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras
- Commercial or purchase invoice — this sets the FOB value Aduanas works from
- Bill of Lading (B/L) — issued by the carrier at origin
- Title and ownership proof — the US title, free of liens
- Homologation certificate from the Ministerio de Transportes — mandatory for all imported vehicles
The import must go through a licensed Agente de Aduanas. This is not optional for vehicles, per Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. AB Group Shipping moves the ocean freight and coordinates with your agent; the filing is the agent's legal responsibility.
SAG inspection and emissions standards
SAG, Chile's Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero, inspects imported vehicles. Under Resolución Exenta N° 1834/2026, new and used vehicles from any origin face emergency phytosanitary measures for gastropod infestation risk. A clean, pressure-washed undercarriage before loading saves time at the port.
Chile's light-vehicle emissions standard for homologation is Euro 6 — Decreto 40/2020 MMA, with Euro 6c from 30 September 2025, per the Ministerio del Medio Ambiente. US-spec vehicles are built to EPA/CARB standards, not Euro. Verify homologation feasibility before you buy.
Budget for charges Aduanas does not publish as fixed figures
Beyond duty and IVA, Aduanas names the Tasa de Almacenaje y Movilización de Mercancías and the Tasa de Verificación de Aforo. Aduanas publishes the Tasa de Verificación de Aforo por Examen as a formula (Compendio de Normas, Anexo 21; Art. 85 Ordenanza de Aduanas): 4% of import duties, never less than 0.5% of the customs value. No fixed amount is published for the storage fee. Port storage, terminal handling and inland transport are also charged separately by each terminal and carrier. Ask your agente de aduanas for a case-specific estimate.
Shipping parts rather than a whole vehicle changes the paperwork completely. Our Importing Auto Parts from USA to Guatemala: Full Guide shows how a parts file differs from a vehicle file — HS classification, invoicing detail and origin documentation.
After Clearance: Plates, Permiso de Circulación and Annual Taxes
Quick Answer: Clearing customs is not the last step. The Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación handles first registration and issues the license plates. The permiso de circulación comes from a municipality's dirección de tránsito, not from the Civil Registry. Green tax and transfer tax rules are set by Chilean tax law separately from customs.
The sequence runs in a fixed order. Skipping a step stalls the one after it.
- Clear customs through your Agente de Aduanas with the DIN.
- Record homologation with the Ministerio de Transportes.
- Register the vehicle for the first time at the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación, which issues the plates.
- Obtain the permiso de circulación from the municipal dirección de tránsito, per ChileAtiende.
Tasación fiscal, impuesto verde and transfer tax
The tasación fiscal is the official valuation table Chilean tax authorities use as the reference value for vehicle-related taxes. It drives the permiso de circulación bracket and the used-vehicle transfer tax base. Confirm your vehicle's figure with the SII or your agente de aduanas rather than estimating it.
The impuesto verde is set by Chilean tax law, separately from customs; whether it applies and how it is calculated depend on the vehicle. The official calculation tool published by the Chilean authorities is the authoritative source; do not rely on a third-party estimate.
A later sale of the vehicle in Chile may carry its own tax under Chilean tax law. Ask the SII or a notary what applies before closing a sale. For context on how IVA works across Chilean transactions generally, see this Chile VAT (IVA) Guide 2026: Rates & Digital Services and this Chile IVA Guide 2026.
Unpaid annual obligations bring fines and interest, and they block a transfer. You cannot sell a car in Chile cleanly with an outstanding permiso de circulación.

- What the number covers: port-to-port ocean freight to San Antonio. You deliver the vehicle to the departure port and collect it in Chile.
- What it does not cover: Chilean duty and IVA, agente de aduanas fees, port storage, inland delivery and registration costs.
- Why it matters for tax: freight sits inside CIF, so the calculator output feeds straight into the 6% and 19% math.

A vehicle pays 6% customs duty on its CIF value plus 19% IVA calculated on CIF plus that duty, according to Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Where an authorized import involves used goods, duties carry an additional 50% surcharge, which turns a 6% duty into an effective 9%. Returning Chileans under the retorno definitivo regime pay duty and IVA but are exempt from that surcharge.
No, not under the general import regime. Article 21 of Ley 18.483 (Estatuto Automotriz) allows only unused vehicles, and Chilean Customs confirmed in 2014 that antique and historic cars are not exempt from that ban. The main legal route for a used car is a Chilean adult who lived abroad 18 months or more without interruption and returns to live in Chile permanently.
CIF is the vehicle's cost plus insurance plus international freight, and it is the base Chilean Customs taxes. If you present no insurance certificate or invoice, Customs estimates the premium at 2% of the FOB value when building the CIF figure, under Chapter 3 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras. Because freight sits inside CIF, the shipping method you choose changes both the duty and the IVA you pay.
Yes. Servicio Nacional de Aduanas requires vehicle imports to be processed through a licensed Agente de Aduanas, who prepares and files the DIN (Declaración de Ingreso) regulated in Annex 18 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras. AB Group Shipping handles the ocean freight and coordinates with your agent, but the customs filing itself is the agent's legal responsibility.
No. The import of used motorcycles into Chile is prohibited under Article 21 of Ley 18.483, and Servicio Nacional de Aduanas states this in its guidance for returning Chileans. New motorcycles can be shipped and taxed normally, and they travel safely in a container alongside the standard 6% duty and 19% IVA calculation.
