  • Most California moves leave through Los Angeles/Long Beach — the same gateway that serves Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii.
  • Transit from Los Angeles runs 7 days to Mexico, 10 days to Guatemala, 14 days to Panama and Peru, 29 days to Chile (port to port).
  • Every international mover you hire should show an FMC OTI/NVOCC license, an FMCSA USDOT/MC number and a Cal-T household mover permit from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (Department of Consumer Affairs) for the California pickup leg.
  • Used vehicles need the original title at the port 72 hours before export, plus an EEI filing in AES regardless of value.

Prices below are port-to-port freight only, quoted from Los Angeles. Your pickup city, destination charges and import duties are priced separately, and the calculator on this page adds them for your exact address.

Port-to-port rates in USD from Los Angeles, calculated with our quoting system (current since October 26, 2026). 2 bedrooms: 20 ft container. 3+ bedrooms: 40 ft HC container. What do international moving companies in California actually do?

Quick Answer: International moving companies in California pack your household goods, truck them to the Port of Los Angeles or Long Beach, load a container, file the US export declaration, and arrange customs clearance and delivery at destination. A licensed mover acts as NVOCC, customs filer and coordinator across both ends of the move.

The job is wider than packing boxes. A full-service move from California runs through nine distinct steps, and each one has its own paperwork and cut-off time.

  1. Survey your home in person or by video to measure volume in cubic meters.
  2. Pack and crate fragile items, art, marble and electronics in ISPM 15 compliant wood where the destination country requires it.
  3. Collect anywhere in California under a Cal-T household mover permit issued by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services.
  4. Dray the shipment to the export terminal at Los Angeles, Long Beach or Oakland.
  5. Stuff the container and seal it with a bolt seal recorded on the Bill of Lading.
  6. File the Electronic Export Information in AES when the shipment requires it.
  7. Issue the House Bill of Lading in the mover's own name.
  8. Clear customs at destination through a local licensed broker.
  9. Deliver, unpack and remove the debris at your new address.

What is an NVOCC, and why does it matter?

A Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) issues its own House Bill of Lading and buys vessel space from the ocean carriers. That means the mover carries contractual liability for the ocean leg. A company that only packs and hands your crates to someone else does not.

Many California firms that advertise as international moving companies california wide are local household goods carriers. They subcontract the ocean leg to an NVOCC and mark it up. That is legal, but it adds a layer between you and the carrier when something goes wrong at the port.

💡

Pro Tip

Ask one question: "Will the Bill of Lading be issued in your name or someone else's?" If the answer is someone else's, you are dealing with a broker. Ask for the actual NVOCC's FMC license number too.

AB Group Shipping picks up anywhere in California — a truck for household goods, a car carrier for vehicles — then consolidates at the export gateway. Which California port will my shipment leave from?

Quick Answer: Most California household goods leave through Los Angeles/Long Beach, the usual export gateway for the state and also for Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii. Oakland, San Diego and Port Hueneme handle specific trades. Your pickup city and destination decide the cheapest routing, not your zip code alone.

Los Angeles and Long Beach sit side by side and function as one gateway for household goods. Together they cover Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, the Inland Empire and most of the Central Valley.

Sailing frequency matters more than driving distance. A weekly string out of Los Angeles to Latin America can beat a closer port with fortnightly departures by five days door to door. We route on the sailing schedule, not the map.

⚠️

Port cut-off is not the vessel ETD

Documentation cut-off falls before the cargo cut-off, and the cargo cut-off falls days before the ship sails. Miss either and you roll to the next sailing — a week or two of delay plus possible storage charges.

The calculator on this page prices pickup from your actual city. It may route your shipment through a different port when that comes out cheaper or faster.

How much does it cost to move overseas from California?

Quick Answer: With AB Group Shipping, a 2-bedroom home in a 20 ft container ships from Los Angeles from $3,100 port to port, and a 3+ bedroom home in a 40 ft high cube from $3,200 (October 2026 quotes). Pickup in California, destination charges and duties are extra. The live price table on this page updates monthly.

Two anchor numbers, both October 2026: Los Angeles to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico from $3,100 for a 20 ft container, and Los Angeles to Rodman, Panama from $3,200 for a 40 ft high cube. Rates move every month, so use the self-updating price table on this page rather than a figure you read elsewhere.

What the port-to-port price does not include

  • California packing, materials and pickup from your home
  • Origin terminal handling where the carrier itemizes it
  • Destination THC, clearance fees and port storage
  • Import duty and VAT set by the destination authority
  • Last-mile trucking, stair carries, long carries and shuttle trucks

Some California movers quote one "all-in" number. That number often buries BAF, CAF, ISPS and peak season surcharges, then destination drayage arrives as a surprise invoice. Ask for an itemized breakdown with each line named. For more ways to cut the bill, read Affordable International Moving 2026: 12 Ways to Save Money on Your Household Goods Shipment.

10-12CBM break-even

LCL is priced per cubic meter. Below roughly 10-12 CBM it beats a container. Above that, a 20 ft FCL wins on cost per CBM and your goods travel sealed.

What about Asia, Europe and Oceania?

Transpacific lanes sail direct from Los Angeles/Long Beach. Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo, Singapore and Manila are served by direct strings, so transit depends mainly on the number of port calls on the rotation. London, Frankfurt and São Paulo normally transship through Panama or Cartagena, which adds a connection window.

Those lanes are routing-dependent and the day count swings with the carrier chosen. Run the calculator for a current figure tied to the actual service, instead of relying on a generic range.

Why Chile takes 29 days

A 29-day transit to San Antonio is not a slow carrier. It is a southbound string with calls at Manzanillo and Callao on the way. The vessel is working cargo, not drifting.

Door-to-door math

Packing takes 1-2 days. Inland to port takes 1-3 days. Cut-off wait adds 2-7 days. Then ocean transit, then 3-10 days of destination clearance, then delivery.

Air freight from LAX cuts the main leg to 3-7 days door to door. It prices by chargeable weight, not volume, so it suits documents, baby gear and a work laptop — not a sofa.

FCL vs LCL vs air freight vs RoRo: which should you choose?

Quick Answer: Choose FCL above roughly 10-12 CBM, LCL below it, air freight only for urgent or high-value items, and RoRo for vehicles shipped alone. LCL means less-than-container-load: your crates share a container with other shippers and are deconsolidated at a destination CFS warehouse.

That deconsolidation step is where LCL loses time. In a bonded CFS warehouse the container is stripped under customs control, which is slower but keeps goods in-bond until clearance. A non-bonded facility is faster to access but requires clearance first. Either way, plan on 5-10 extra days at destination versus an FCL container delivered straight to your door.

MethodTypical volumeCost basisBest use caseMain risk

Simple volume rules

  • Studio or 1 bedroom → LCL or a shared container
  • 2 bedrooms → 20 ft container
  • 3+ bedrooms → 40 ft high cube
  • 4+ bedrooms plus a car → 40 ft HC plus a separate vehicle booking

Cars sharing a 40 ft with household goods are priced with the shared-container approximation per car. On Los Angeles to Buenaventura, that works out to approx. $1,850 per car against the October 2026 40 ft HC line. A car shipped alone uses the vehicle line instead.

⚠️

Some cargo never fits a container

RVs, motorhomes, boats on trailers above container height, semi-trucks and heavy machinery move on a flat rack or a RoRo vessel. A specialist quotes them after you submit the request form — no container price applies.

What documents do I need to ship household goods out of the United States?

Quick Answer: You need a valid passport, destination visa or residence permit, a detailed valued packing list, CBP Form 3299 for personal effects, a supplemental declaration, the ocean Bill of Lading, and an EEI filing in AES producing an ITN number when required. Vehicles always add title documents.

The Internal Transaction Number (ITN) is the confirmation code AES returns after your Electronic Export Information filing in CBP's ACE portal. No ITN, no loading — the terminal will not release the container to the vessel.

When is an AES filing required?

  • Any single commodity line valued over $2,500
  • All goods requiring an export license or ECCN control
  • Every used self-propelled vehicle, regardless of value

Household goods shipped as cargo under a Bill of Lading must still be reported in AES under the Foreign Trade Regulations (15 CFR 30.38); only the Schedule B code is waived. The exemption in 15 CFR 30.37(p) covers only baggage and personal effects not shipped as cargo, and the general $2,500-per-Schedule-B exemption also applies. Your forwarder makes that call, not you. We also need your EIN as the USPPI identifier (an SSN cannot be used in AES since March 24, 2010; a passport number is allowed only for foreign parties in defined cases), plus a Power of Attorney or Shipper's Letter of Instruction so we can file on your behalf.

Destination paperwork

Latin American clearances run in Spanish. Expect to produce a Factura Comercial, Certificado de Origen and Manifiesto de Carga where they apply. People importing household goods under Colombia's menaje regime do not need to register in the RUT. For US-bound returns, CBP Form 3299 (Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles) and the Supplemental Declaration are the core documents.

⚠️

Wood and soil will stop your container

Where the destination country requires it, wood crating must be ISPM 15 compliant and stamped, either heat-treated or methyl bromide fumigated. Outdoor equipment, bikes, lawn mowers and camping gear must be soil-free for Australia and New Zealand. Quarantine failures mean fumigation at your cost and a week lost.

The documentation logic is the same on every US coast. Our guide to International Movers New York: All You Need to Know walks through the same filings from an East Coast gateway. The Federal Maritime Commission also publishes useful consumer guidance in its Moving Dos and Don'ts.

Do I pay customs duty when I move my household goods abroad?

Quick Answer: Usually no, if you qualify for a transfer-of-residence exemption. A transfer of residence lets a person changing residence import used personal effects duty-free, subject to ownership, use and frequency conditions set by the destination authority.

Each authority writes its own rules. Not every country has a duty-free regime. Colombia charges a 15% single tax (tributo único) on menaje doméstico; the only full exemptions are for Colombians certified under the Ley de Retorno (Ley 1565 de 2012) and for diplomats. Confirm your destination's rules with a licensed customs agent or the consulate before shipping.

Typical conditions for the exemption

  • Goods owned and used by you before the move
  • Shipment arrives within a set window around your own arrival
  • You hold a valid residence visa or permit
  • No commercial quantities of any single item

New items in original packaging get taxed. A refrigerator bought the week before the move is not "used personal effects" to a customs inspector. Duty and VAT apply at the country's published rates.

Worked example: a new appliance declared at $1,000 CIF, in a country applying 10% duty and 19% VAT. Duty = $1,000 × 10% = $100. VAT base = $1,000 + $100 = $1,100. VAT = $1,100 × 19% = $209. Total payable = $309. Rates vary by HS code and country, so treat this as the math, not the answer.

⚠️

Vehicles are not household goods

Cars are almost never covered by the transfer-of-residence exemption. They face separate duty, age limits and homologation rules. Confirm with a licensed customs broker in the destination country before you book — AB Group Shipping is a freight forwarder, not legal counsel.

Destination rules drive the whole budget. Our Moving to Chile Cost Calculator: Instant Quotes (2026) shows how one country's requirements shape a quote.

Can I ship my car internationally from the Port of Long Beach?

Quick Answer: Yes. CBP requires the original title, or a certified copy plus two copies, delivered to the port at least 72 hours before export, a lienholder authorization letter if the car is financed or leased, and an EEI filing in AES for every used vehicle regardless of value.

Three ways to ship a vehicle from California

RoRo

Your running car drives onto the vessel. Cheapest option for a standard car, priced per unit by dimensions. No personal items inside — terminals enforce this strictly.

Container

Sole-use gives the best protection and allows personal items where the destination permits. Sharing a 40 ft with a second car splits the cost at approx. half the container line per car.

Documents and vehicle prep

  • Original title, or certified copy plus two copies, at the port 72 hours before export
  • Lienholder authorization letter for financed or leased cars
  • Bill of sale, passport copy, power of attorney for the forwarder
  • EEI filing in AES — required whatever the vehicle is worth
  • Vehicle prepared to the carrier's and terminal's fuel, battery and key requirements

EPA Form 3520-1 and DOT Form HS-7 apply when a vehicle enters the United States. Going outbound, the destination country sets the age limit, emissions standard and homologation rules. Check them before you book, because a non-compliant car can be refused entry and re-exported at your cost.

Motorcycles ship crated or in consolidated containers. RVs, motorhomes, semi-trucks and heavy machinery move on flat rack or RoRo with a specialist quote. Anything about plates, registration surrender or smog status — confirm with the California DMV.

How do I verify and choose the best international moving company in California?

Quick Answer: Verify four credentials before signing: an FMC Ocean Transportation Intermediary license (OTI/NVOCC number), an FMCSA USDOT and MC number, a household mover (Cal-T) permit from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services for the in-state pickup leg, and industry credentials such as FIDI-FAIM certification (independently audited) or IAM membership (a trade association). Then confirm bonding and cargo insurance in writing.

CredentialIssuing bodyHow to verifyWhy it matters
OTI / NVOCC licenseFederal Maritime CommissionSearch the FMC OTI list by company nameLegal authority to arrange ocean freight

Cal-T permitBureau of Household Goods and Services (DCA)Check the permit with the BureauLegal intrastate pickup in California
FIDI-FAIM / IAMFIDI / IAMRequest the certificate or proof of membershipFIDI-FAIM is independently audited; IAM is trade association membership

Insurance: read the wording

Marine cargo all-risk covers damage from any external cause not excluded. Named-perils covers only listed events, which is much narrower. Premiums typically run 1-3% of declared value. Released-value liability at cents per pound is not insurance — a 40 kg sofa pays out almost nothing.

💡

Red flags in a California quote

No written itemized quote. Deposit demanded by wire or a cash app. No physical or video survey. A price far below every other bid. No House Bill of Lading issued in the mover's own name. Any one of these should end the conversation.

Also pin down the service level in writing. Ask who pays destination THC, clearance and delivery — door-to-port (DAP-style) or full door-to-door with duties prepaid (DDP-style). And ask about storage: origin storage near the Los Angeles/Long Beach gateway between packing and sailing, and destination storage while you find housing. Both bill monthly.

What's included door-to-door, and what should you not pack?

Quick Answer: Door-to-door covers packing, pickup in California, export filing, ocean freight, destination clearance and delivery to your new address. Door-to-port stops when the container is discharged, leaving you the terminal charges, clearance and trucking. Prohibited items include fuels, aerosols, firearms, alcohol in many lanes and perishables.

Door-to-port (DAP-style)

Includes packing, pickup, export filing and ocean freight to the destination terminal. You pay destination THC, clearance, duty and trucking. You also carry the demurrage risk if your documents arrive late.

Door-to-door (DDP-style)

Everything through to your new address, with duties prepaid where offered. The quote is higher, and the payer takes on import-side liability at destination. Fewer surprises, more up-front cost.

On a DAP-style service we deliver but you settle import duties and taxes. On a DDP-style service duties are prepaid. FOB and CIF appear on the Bill of Lading and describe the ocean leg only — they do not cover your front door.

What you cannot ship

  • Flammables, aerosols, propane tanks, paint and solvents
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Alcohol — country-dependent and heavily taxed
  • Plants, seeds, soil and fresh food
  • Medication in bulk quantities
💡

Demurrage is a document problem

Free time at destination is limited and set by each terminal and carrier, then per-diem charges accrue daily per container. Slow courier delivery of the original Bill of Lading is the number one cause. Ask for a telex release or an electronic B/L.

Common California scenarios: military PCS moves with government-funded weight allowances, corporate relocations where the employer buys DDP, students shipping under 5 CBM by LCL, and retirees heading south. Price your California move today

With thousands of shipments processed across the USA–Latin America corridor, we price California moves the same way every time: your real pickup city, your real volume, the real sailing. No estimate by phone, no follow-up calls to get a number.

Use the calculator on this page to compare FCL, LCL, air and vehicle rates from your California address to your destination port. It prices the pickup from your own city, picks the cheapest gateway, and shows the current month's rate — not a figure from last year.

How much does it cost to move overseas from California?+

Cost depends on volume, destination port, service level and the season — a 2-bedroom home in a 20 ft container is the most common booking, and a 3+ bedroom home needs a 40 ft high cube. Port-to-port freight, California pickup, destination charges and duties are all priced separately. Check the price table on this page, which updates monthly, or run the calculator for your exact city and destination.

How long does a shipping container take from Los Angeles to its destination?+

Port-to-port transit from Los Angeles runs about 7 days to Mexico, 10 days to Guatemala, 14 days to Panama and Peru, 16 days to El Salvador and Costa Rica, 20 days to Colombia and 29 days to Chile. Add roughly 7 to 14 days for packing, port cut-off and customs clearance at destination. Transpacific and European lanes are longer and often transship.

Do I need to pay customs duty when I move my household goods abroad?+

Usually no, if you qualify for a transfer-of-residence exemption in the destination country. Most authorities require that you owned and used the goods before the move, that you hold a residence visa, and that the shipment arrives within a set window around your own arrival. New items, appliances in original packaging and vehicles are taxed at the country's published rates, so confirm with a licensed customs broker there.

What documents do I need to ship household goods out of the United States?+

You need a valid passport, your destination visa or residence permit, a detailed valued inventory or packing list, a power of attorney or shipper's letter of instruction for your forwarder, and the ocean Bill of Lading. An Electronic Export Information filing in AES producing an ITN number is required for licensed goods and for every used vehicle, regardless of value.

Can I ship my car internationally from the Port of Long Beach?+

Yes. CBP requires the original title, or a certified copy plus two copies, at the port at least 72 hours before export, plus a lienholder authorization letter if the vehicle is financed or leased. Every used vehicle also needs an EEI filing in AES whatever its value, and the destination country sets its own age, emissions and homologation limits.

How do I verify an international moving company in California is licensed?+

Check four things: the Federal Maritime Commission OTI/NVOCC license, the FMCSA USDOT and MC numbers on SAFER, a household mover (Cal-T) permit from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services for the California pickup leg, and FIDI-FAIM certification (independently audited) or IAM membership (a trade association, not an audit). Ask for the license numbers in writing and confirm cargo insurance terms before you pay any deposit.
