Quick Answer: With AB Group Shipping, consolidated cargo (LCL) to Chile starts at $625 for 2 m³ / 500 kg port to port from Miami (September 2026 quote), $665 from Los Angeles and $806 from Houston. Ocean transit runs 14-32 days by gateway. Chile then charges 6% duty and 19% IVA on CIF value.
- CBM = length × width × height in meters. Ocean LCL can bill dense cargo on weight instead of volume, and carriers usually apply a minimum charge per shipment.
- Port-to-port freight is only part of the bill: THC destino, desconsolidación, almacenaje after free days and the agente de aduana fee land in Chile.
- Chile charges 6% ad valorem duty on CIF value plus 19% IVA on CIF + duty (Servicio Nacional de Aduanas). Used goods pay a 50% surcharge on the duties that apply.
- Past a certain volume, a 20' FCL beats LCL on cost per cubic meter; where depends on your lane, cargo density and current rates. Run both in the calculator on this page before you book.
The price table under the opening answer updates every month, so the figures you see there are current even when this text names September 2026. Everything below shows you how the number is built, line by line, so you can reproduce it for your own cargo.

Shipping from another state? Which port to read
Each port in the table is the one that cargo from these states usually leaves through. Miami: Florida. Houston: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. New Jersey: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia and West Virginia. Los Angeles: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii. Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama ship through Savannah; Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota ship through Chicago (rail); Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska ship through Seattle / Tacoma: those ports are not in the table yet. We pick up in every state, and the calculator finds the best port from your city.
What is consolidated cargo (LCL) and how is it billed to Chile?
Quick Answer: Consolidated cargo, or LCL (Less than Container Load), means your pallets share a container with other importers' freight. You pay only for the space you use, measured in cubic meters. Dense cargo can be billed on weight instead of volume, and carriers usually apply a minimum charge per shipment.
Several shippers' cargo is merged into one container at a CFS warehouse near the departure port. That container sails as a single unit. In Chile, a deconsolidation warehouse splits it back into individual lots.
CBM means metro cúbico — a box 1 m × 1 m × 1 m. It is the standard ocean volume unit. Every calculadora carga consolidada chile prices on this unit, not on pallet count or box count.
The consolidator chain, step by step
- Deliver your cargo to the origin CFS warehouse before the consolidation cut-off.
- Consolidation: the NVOCC loads your lot with other shippers into one container.
- Master B/L: the ocean carrier issues it to the NVOCC for the whole box.
- House B/L: the NVOCC issues one in your name for your lot only.
- Deconsolidation happens at a bonded warehouse in San Antonio or Valparaíso.
LCL fits shipments of roughly 1 to 13 CBM. Typical cargo on this lane: e-commerce stock, machinery spare parts, furniture, store fixtures and trade-show displays. The same mechanics apply across the region — our guide to LCL Shipping USA to Guatemala 2026: Instant Quotes walks through consolidation out of the USA on a shorter lane.
Pro Tip
Ask whether the house B/L is issued by the NVOCC moving your box or by a third-party co-loader. On a co-loaded lot, your release in Chile depends on two parties clearing their accounts, not one. That is where small LCL shipments lose days at the warehouse.
How do I calculate the CBM of my cargo for an LCL shipment to Chile?
Quick Answer: Measure each package in meters, then multiply length × width × height. Add every package to get total CBM. Note your gross weight too. Dense cargo can be billed on weight rather than volume, and small lots usually pay a minimum charge; ask which weight-to-volume ratio and minimum your quote uses.
Work the formula once and it stays simple. A standard pallet measuring 1.20 m × 1.00 m × 1.45 m gives 1.74 CBM. Three identical pallets give 5.22 CBM chargeable.
Now check the weight. Heavy cargo can be billed on weight rather than volume, using the weight-to-volume ratio in the carrier's or forwarder's tariff. Ask which ratio your quote applies before you compare.
Why dense cargo breaks the volume math
Tiles, auto parts, canned goods and liquids are dense and are more likely to pay on weight. Textiles, furniture and plastic housewares run light and pay on volume.
Air freight uses its own volumetric-weight formula, set by the airline or forwarder. The same crate can price very differently by mode, which is why the calculator on this page asks for both figures.
How many chargeable units a lot ends up with depends on its density and on the weight-to-volume ratio in the tariff: textiles and flat-pack furniture usually pay on volume, while ceramic tiles or canned food can pay on weight.
Measure the pallet, not the boxes
Include the 15 cm pallet base and any carton overhang in your height and footprint. Under-measuring is the number one reason a quote is reissued at the CFS. The warehouse re-measures every lot on arrival, and the re-measured figure is the one that gets billed.

Go to the calculator →How much does one cubic meter of consolidated cargo to Chile cost?
Quick Answer: Price depends on your departure gateway, total cubic meters and cargo density. In September 2026, AB Group Shipping quoted consolidated cargo of 2 m³ / 500 kg port to port from $625 out of Miami, $665 from Los Angeles and $806 from Houston. The live table under this answer updates monthly.
Those three figures are real quotes from our system, dated September 2026. They are port to port: you deliver to the departure port and collect in Santiago. For any other origin or volume, the self-updating table and the calculator on this page price your exact lane.
Port-to-port consolidated cargo from Miami. Prices move every month with vessel space and bunker costs, so treat this as a reference point and quote your own volume in the calculator.
Why cost per CBM falls as volume grows
Some charges are fixed per shipment, not per cubic meter. B/L issuance, ISPS and CFS handling cost the same on a 2 CBM lot as on a 9 CBM lot. Spread them across more volume and your effective rate per cubic meter drops sharply.
That is the single biggest reason a 1 CBM shipment feels expensive. The freight itself is small; the documentation and handling are not.
Which gateway does your region ship through?
- Florida and the Southeast coast → PortMiami
- Texas and the central states → Port Houston
- California and the Southwest → Los Angeles / Long Beach
- The Northeast → Port of New York and New Jersey
- Georgia and the inland Southeast → Savannah
- The Midwest → rail to the coast through Chicago
- The Pacific Northwest → Seattle
Your gateway drives both price and transit. A shipper in Dallas quoting a Miami rate will see a different number once the lane runs through Houston.
Headline per-CBM rates hide the Chilean side
A "$75 per CBM to Chile" advertisement almost always excludes destination charges. Once THC destino and desconsolidación land, the real cost of a small lot can rise considerably. Ask any forwarder, including us, for the destination estimate in writing before you compare two quotes.

Go to the calculator →What local charges hit my LCL shipment when it lands in Chile?
Quick Answer: Chilean destination charges are separate from ocean freight. Expect THC destino, desconsolidación at the CFS warehouse, gate fee, house B/L release, ISPS and almacenaje once free days expire. Add the agente de aduana fee for the DIN. Amounts vary by terminal, warehouse and provider.
Each line item has a trigger. Knowing the trigger is how you keep the bill flat.
- THC destino: terminal handling at San Antonio or Valparaíso, charged per CBM or per shipment.
- Desconsolidación: the warehouse unloads the container and separates your lot from the others.
- Emisión de BL / release: the agent releases the house B/L once freight and local charges clear.
- Gate fee: charged when the truck takes your cargo out of the warehouse.
- ISPS: the port security levy; ask where in the voyage your quote applies it.
- Almacenaje: daily storage once free days run out, and it accrues fast on small lots.
When does the free-time clock actually start?
Free storage days, and when they start, vary by operator. Confirm yours in writing before the vessel arrives.
Ask whether the clock starts at vessel arrival or warehouse availability. Deconsolidation can take several days after berthing. A DIN filed late burns storage days you already paid for in free time.
| Line item | Who sets it | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean freight (port to port) | AB Group Shipping | Per shipment — from $625 for 2 m³ ex Miami (Sep 2026) |
| Origin CFS handling | Origin warehouse | Per CBM / per shipment |
| House B/L issuance | NVOCC | Flat per shipment |
| THC destino | Chilean terminal | Per CBM or per shipment |
| Desconsolidación | Deconsolidation warehouse | Per CBM |
| Almacenaje | Warehouse operator | Per day after free time |
| Agente de aduana | Licensed customs agent | Fee per DIN, agreed in advance |
| Ad valorem duty | Servicio Nacional de Aduanas | 6% of CIF value |
| IVA | Servicio Nacional de Aduanas | 19% of CIF + duty |
"All-in" and itemized quotes can end at the same number
Neither format is dishonest by itself. The problem is comparing an all-in quote that includes THC destino and desconsolidación against an itemized one that does not. Ask both forwarders the same question: which Chilean destination charges are inside this figure?
What taxes do I pay when importing consolidated cargo to Chile?
Quick Answer: As a general rule, Chilean imports pay a 6% ad valorem duty on CIF value plus 19% IVA on CIF value plus the duty, according to the Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Used goods pay an extra surcharge of 50% on the duties that apply to them, except under Partida 0009 of Sección 0.
The base is CIF: cost plus insurance plus freight. Duty comes first, then IVA is applied to CIF plus that duty [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, "¿Cuánto impuesto se paga al importar?"].
Where their import is authorized, used goods pay an additional 50% surcharge on the duties that apply to them [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas; Arancel Aduanero, Regla General Complementaria N° 3]. Used goods imported under Partida 0009 of Sección 0 are not subject to that surcharge.
Worked example on an $8,000 CIF consignment
- Start with the CIF value: $8,000 (goods + insurance + freight).
- Apply 6% ad valorem duty: $8,000 × 0.06 = $480.
- Build the IVA base: $8,000 + $480 = $8,480.
- Apply 19% IVA: $8,480 × 0.19 = $1,611.20.
- Total duty plus IVA: $2,091.20 on an $8,000 CIF consignment.
That math is reproducible with your own numbers. It is a worked example of the published rates, not a quote.
Insurance, CIF and the aforo fee
Insurance is not a condition for customs clearance in Chile. Where there is no insurance certificate or invoice, Customs estimates the premium at 2% of the FOB value when working out CIF [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, Compendio de Normas Aduaneras, Capítulo 3].
Aduanas also names two further charges. The Tasa de Verificación de Aforo por Examen is published as a formula: 4% of import duties, never less than 0.5% of the customs value [Compendio de Normas, Anexo 21; Art. 85 Ordenanza de Aduanas]. The Tasa de Almacenaje y Movilización de Mercancías is named, but no amount was found published.
Do trade agreements cut the 6% duty?
Be careful here. The EU-Chile Agreement certificate of origin applies only to EU-origin goods, not to US-origin goods imported into Chile [Subsecretaría de Relaciones Económicas Internacionales (Subrei)].
For preferential treatment on US-origin goods, confirm the tariff classification and origin documentation with a licensed agente de aduana before you ship. AB Group Shipping is a freight forwarder, not a customs agent or legal counsel.
Personal effects follow different rules
If you are shipping household goods rather than commercial stock, the franchise and Partida 0009 rules change the picture entirely. Read our Moving to Chile Cost Calculator: Instant Quotes (2026) for menaje de casa, and confirm eligibility with a licensed agente de aduana before buying anything.

Go to the calculator →Which Chilean port should my consolidated cargo arrive at?
Quick Answer: San Antonio handles the largest share of Chile's containerized imports and most USA LCL consolidations, with Valparaíso the main alternative. Iquique serves ZOFRI free-zone importers, Arica covers the far north and Bolivian transit, while Coronel and Antofagasta serve the south and mining regions. Port choice changes inland cost.
Chile is 4,300 km long. Picking the wrong entry port can add a 1,000 km domestic truck leg that costs more than the ocean freight saving.
| Port | Serves | LCL deconsolidation | Inland leg to Santiago |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Antonio (CLSAI) | Central Chile, Santiago metro | Widest warehouse choice | About 110 km, same or next day |
| Valparaíso (CLVAP) | Same basin, Viña del Mar | Available, different operators | About 120 km, same or next day |
| Iquique (CLIQQ) | ZOFRI free-zone importers | Available, free-zone rules apply | About 1,800 km — not practical |
| Arica (CLARI) | Far north, Bolivian transit | Limited for LCL | About 2,050 km — not practical |
| Antofagasta (CLANF) | Mining supply chain | Limited for LCL | About 1,350 km — not practical |
| Coronel (CLCNL) | Biobío and the south | Limited, often transshipped | About 520 km south of Santiago |
Route through San Antonio or Valparaíso
This is where most USA consolidations to Chile deconsolidate. More warehouses mean more competition on desconsolidación and almacenaje. Direct services, fewer transshipments and predictable release timing. For any buyer in the Santiago basin, this corridor is the default.
Route to a regional port
A buyer in Antofagasta or Concepción can save a long domestic truck leg by entering closer to the delivery point. Free-zone routings through Iquique, Arica or Punta Arenas carry their own registration and use conditions [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas]. Confirm the regime before booking.
Pro Tip
Asking for a southern Chilean port on a 2 CBM lot usually triggers a transshipment through San Antonio anyway. You add 7 to 14 days and a second handling, then truck it anyway. On small volumes, enter at San Antonio and truck domestically.
How long does consolidated cargo take from Miami to Santiago?
Quick Answer: Port-to-port ocean transit to Chile runs about 14 days from New York/New Jersey, 24 days from Miami, 29 days from Los Angeles and 32 days from Houston. Consolidated cargo adds time at both ends: CFS cut-off before loading, then deconsolidation and customs clearance after arrival in Chile.

Why LCL runs slower than FCL on the same vessel
Your cargo must arrive before the consolidation cut-off, not the vessel ETD. Those are different dates, often three to five days apart. The CFS needs time to load, seal and file the master manifest.
At the other end, the container must be stripped before anyone touches your pallets. Then the DIN (Declaración de Ingreso) is filed — it is regulated in Anexo 18 of the Compendio de Normas Aduaneras [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas]. Clearance time varies by terminal and by whether your lot is selected for examination, so confirm the realistic window with your agente de aduana.
Ocean, air or courier to Chile?

|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean LCL | 14-32 days + handling | 1-13 CBM | Stock, furniture, parts, fixtures |
| Air consolidation | Days, not weeks | Under 1 CBM, dense cargo | Urgent parts, samples, high value |
| Courier | 3-8 days | Parcels | Documents, small e-commerce orders |

Go to the calculator →LCL or FCL to Chile: how many cubic meters before a full container?
Quick Answer: Small lots almost always cost less as consolidated cargo. As volume grows the two converge, and past a break-even point that depends on your lane and current rates, a 20' FCL usually costs less per cubic meter while cutting handling and transit time. Density, cargo value and storage risk move the break-even point.
The break-even point is a guide, not a law. Dense cargo moves it down. A heavy lot of tiles can bill on weight, so it can justify a 20' container at a lower volume.
Capacity gives you the ceiling. A 40' holds roughly twice the volume of a 20'; ask for the usable capacity of the equipment quoted. Paying for a 20' that is not full still buys faster handling and fewer touch points.
| Volume | Recommended mode | Relative cost per CBM | Handling touches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 CBM | LCL (minimum charge applies) | Highest | CFS in, CFS out |
| 3 CBM | LCL | High | CFS in, CFS out |
| 5 CBM | LCL | Moderate | CFS in, CFS out |
| 10 CBM | LCL, but compare FCL | Converging | CFS in, CFS out |
| 15 CBM | Compare LCL and 20' FCL | Depends on lane and rates | Sealed door to door |
| 20 CBM | 20' FCL | Lowest | Sealed door to door |
Consolidated cargo (LCL)
You pay only for the cubic meters you use, subject to a minimum charge. Weekly sailings mean you ship without waiting for stock to build up. The trade-off is more handling and a shared free-time clock at the deconsolidation warehouse.
Full container (FCL)
Your cargo is sealed at origin and opened in Chile. That cuts damage and pilferage exposure and clears as a single unit. Past the break-even volume it also wins on cost per cubic meter, with a shorter end-to-end timeline.
The full break-even math, including density adjustments, is set out in USA-Latin America FCL vs LCL: The 10 CBM Breakpoint. Independent tools such as the Calculadora gratuita de costes de envío de contenedores are useful for a second reference on container economics.

Go to the calculator →How do I use the consolidated cargo calculator for Chile?
Quick Answer: Enter your origin city or port, destination in Chile, total cubic meters and gross weight. The calculator applies the W/M rule, picks the higher chargeable figure and returns a port-to-port price with transit time in seconds. No signup, no email, no follow-up calls.
The calculadora carga consolidada chile on this page is pre-set for LCL. Have your numbers ready and it takes under a minute.
What to prepare before quoting
- Packing list with dimensions in meters per piece
- Gross weight per piece, in kilograms
- Commercial invoice value for the CIF calculation
- HS code for each product line
- Whether the goods are new or used — the used-goods surcharge depends on it
Pick your Incoterm deliberately
FOB puts the ocean leg under your control and matches a port-to-port quote cleanly. EXW adds origin pickup and export clearance to your side of the ledger. CIF ends at the Chilean port, with duty, IVA and local charges still ahead of you.
DAP and DDP shift destination risk to the seller. DDP looks simple on paper but exposes the seller to Chilean import-side liability — including IVA recovery it may not be registered to claim.
Documents your agente de aduana needs for the DIN
- Factura comercial with full product descriptions and values
- Packing list matching the invoice line for line
- Bill of lading (the house B/L on a consolidated shipment)
- Certificado de origen where a preference is claimed and valid
- Mandato authorizing the customs agent to act for you
Check restrictions before you book
Some products need an approval that takes longer than the voyage. Alcohols, alcoholic drinks and vinegars, plus food products of animal or plant origin, need SAG approval. Pharmaceutical products need the health service's authorization [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, "Productos que requieren autorización o Visto Bueno"].
Firearms, ammunition, explosives, chemical, flammable and asphyxiating substances and martial-arts implements need authorization from the Dirección General de Movilización Nacional [Servicio Nacional de Aduanas]. Electrical products marketed in Chile require the SEC seal [ChileAtiende ficha 2644]. Anything outside these published rules should go to a licensed agente de aduana before you buy stock.
The five costliest calculation mistakes
- Ignoring Chilean destination charges when comparing two quotes.
- Under-measuring pallets — the CFS re-measures and rebills.
- Forgetting the minimum charge on small lots.
- Assuming a trade agreement applies without a valid certificate of origin.
- Missing free storage days and paying almacenaje on a small lot.
Pro Tip
Run the same cargo twice: once as LCL at your current volume, once as a 20' FCL. If you are close to the break-even and buying again in 60 days, consolidating two purchase orders into one container often beats two separate LCL lots. Public freight datasets such as California's freight classification yards registry show how rail and port infrastructure shapes West Coast gateway options.

Quick Answer: Enter your cubic meters, gross weight and departure city in the calculator on this page. It applies the W/M rule, prices your exact origin gateway and returns a port-to-port figure with transit time in seconds. Then confirm duty classification with a licensed agente de aduana before you ship.
With shipments moving across the USA-Latin America corridor every week, our lane data for Chile is live, not estimated. The envío por metro cúbico a chile figure you see reflects current vessel space, not a stale rate sheet.
Use the calculadora carga consolidada chile on this page to compare LCL against a 20' FCL for the same cargo. It costs nothing, asks for no email, and nobody calls you afterwards. For duty classification, SAG permits or any question about your specific HS codes, talk to a licensed agente de aduana — we will tell you exactly what they need from us.
Multiply length × width × height in meters for each package, then add them together. Ocean consolidation can bill dense cargo on weight instead of volume, using the weight-to-volume ratio in the carrier's or forwarder's tariff. Small lots usually pay a minimum charge, so a very small box can cost as much as a larger one.
As a general rule, you pay a 6% ad valorem duty on the CIF value plus 19% IVA on the CIF value plus that duty, according to the Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Used goods pay an additional surcharge of 50% on the duties that apply to them, with the exception of goods entered under Partida 0009 of Sección 0. Confirm your specific classification with a licensed agente de aduana.
Ocean transit runs roughly 14 days from New York/New Jersey, 24 days from Miami, 29 days from Los Angeles and 32 days from Houston, port to port. Consolidated cargo adds time on both ends for CFS consolidation before loading and deconsolidation plus customs clearance after arrival. Build in a buffer for the DIN and any SAG or health inspection.
There is no fixed number: the break-even point depends on your lane, cargo density and current rates. Small lots are normally cheaper as consolidated cargo; past the break-even a 20' container typically wins on cost per cubic meter while cutting handling and transit. Dense cargo shifts the line lower because LCL bills on weight when weight exceeds volume.
Most United States consolidations to Chile arrive at San Antonio, with Valparaíso as the main alternative, because both have the deconsolidation warehouses that LCL requires. Iquique serves ZOFRI free-zone importers, while Arica, Antofagasta and Coronel cover the far north, mining regions and the south. Port choice changes your inland trucking cost to Santiago.
No. Port-to-port consolidated freight covers the ocean leg only. THC destino, desconsolidación, warehouse storage after free days, the agente de aduana fee, duty and IVA are billed separately in Chile and set by each terminal, warehouse and authority. Use the calculator on this page for the freight, then ask your customs agent for the destination estimate.
