Quick Answer: Courier volumetric weight equals length × width × height divided by the carrier's DIM divisor — 139 for inches and pounds, 5000 for centimeters and kilos. Carriers bill the higher of actual and volumetric weight. With AB Group Shipping, a 10 kg courier parcel to Colombia starts at $226 (October 2026 quote).

  • Volumetric weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor. Use 139 for in/lb, 5000 for cm/kg on express courier; 139 for USPS parcels over 1,728 in³ (since July 12, 2026); 6000 for IATA air cargo.
  • Chargeable weight is always the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight — that is the number your invoice uses.
  • One cubic meter equals 200 kg volumetric on express (5000), 167 kg on air cargo (6000), and 1,000 kg on LCL ocean freight.
  • Right-sizing your box is the fastest way to cut cost: moving the same goods from a 60×50×40 cm carton to a 50×40×30 cm one halves volumetric weight, from 24 kg to 12 kg.

Most small sellers lose money before the box ever leaves the house. The carton is too big, the divisor does the rest, and the invoice arrives with kilos nobody put on a scale.

What is volumetric weight and why does the courier charge it?

Quick Answer: Volumetric weight is the space a parcel occupies, converted into kilos or pounds using a fixed divisor. Airlines and couriers sell cargo space, not just mass. A light but bulky box fills an aircraft position long before it hits the weight limit, so carriers bill the larger of the two figures.

The industry term is dimensional weight, or peso volumétrico in Spanish. It converts cubic centimeters into billable kilos using a DIM divisor set by the carrier.

The number that reaches your invoice is called chargeable weight. It is simply the higher of two figures: the scale weight and the volumetric weight. Nothing else decides the freight line on your bill.

The commercial logic is physical. An aircraft ULD runs out of cubic meters long before it runs out of kilos. A pallet position holds roughly 200 kg per cubic meter of revenue before the carrier is giving space away free.

Which parcels get hit hardest?

Light, bulky goods trigger volumetric billing almost every time. Small sellers building their own boxes hit this constantly.

  • Pillows, cushions, duvets and foam products — almost always billed on volume, not weight
  • Lamp shades, plastic storage bins and empty containers
  • Sneakers shipped inside their retail shoe boxes
  • Baby gear: strollers, car seats, bassinets
  • Snack food, chips, cereal and anything sold in air-filled packaging

Every USA to Latin America courier lane applies the same rule. Miami to Cartagena, Houston to Guatemala City, Los Angeles to Lima and New York to Santo Domingo all run on the same divisor math.

200 kgPer m³ at divisor 5000

Any parcel with a density below 200 kg per cubic meter will be billed on volume, not on the scale. Many self-packed boxes from small sellers fall below that line.

How do you calculate the volumetric weight of a courier package?

Quick Answer: Multiply length by width by height, then divide by the carrier's divisor. In centimeters and kilos, divide by 5000 for express courier. In inches and pounds, divide by 139. Compare the result against the scale weight and pay whichever is higher — that is your chargeable weight.

Here is the metric version worked through. A carton measures 60 × 50 × 40 cm. That is 120,000 cm³. Divided by 5000, the volumetric weight is 24 kg.

If that same box weighs 9 kg on the scale, you pay for 24 kg. The courier bills the higher figure, every time.

The imperial version: divisor 139

A box measuring 24 × 20 × 16 inches gives 7,680 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that is 55.3 lb volumetric. Against a 20 lb scale weight, you pay 56 lb after rounding up.

The two divisors are mathematical twins. One cubic inch equals 16.387 cm³, and one pound equals 0.4536 kg. Run the conversion and 5000 in metric becomes 139 in imperial. They describe the same density assumption, not two different rules. See also the Calculadora de peso tasable published by Freightos.

Step-by-step for a self-packed box

  1. Seal the carton first. Tape it, strap it, and only then reach for the tape measure.
  2. Measure length, width and height at the widest points, bulges included.
  3. Round each side up to the next whole centimeter or inch.
  4. Multiply the three dimensions together.
  5. Divide by 5000 (cm/kg) or 139 (in/lb).
  6. Compare that result against the scale weight and take the higher number.

For a lane-specific worked example with live rates, see our Courier Calculator Honduras: Instant Rates (2026) guide.

💡

Pro Tip

Run the calculation before you buy the carton, not after. Sellers who order boxes in 5 cm size steps instead of using whatever is in the garage pay for less air on the same goods.

What is the DIM divisor for DHL, FedEx, UPS and USPS?

Quick Answer: DHL Express, FedEx International and UPS Worldwide all use 5000 in centimeters and 139 in inches for international shipments. Since July 12, 2026, USPS applies 139 to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select parcels over 1,728 cubic inches. The divisor decides everything: the higher the divisor, the lower your volumetric weight and your bill.

A divisor is a density assumption dressed as arithmetic. Divisor 5000 assumes 200 kg per cubic meter. Divisor 6000 assumes 167 kg. USPS divisor 139 (since July 12, 2026) assumes roughly 12.4 lb per cubic foot.

Divisors are set in each carrier's tariff and can change, and consolidators may apply their own figure under a house tariff.

Where does AB Group Shipping's house courier sit?

We operate two paths. One uses our commercial DHL, FedEx and UPS accounts, which keeps the 5000/139 divisor and the carrier's own rounding. The other is our house courier service on consolidated lanes into Latin America and the Caribbean.

On a direct carrier account you get the carrier's brand network and its surcharge schedule. On a house service you get our negotiated consolidation rate, which often beats a retail counter price on low-density parcels to Colombia, Peru or Honduras.

⚠️

Rounding starts with the dimensions

Since August 18, 2025, FedEx and UPS round every side up to the next whole inch before multiplying, and round the weight up to the next whole pound. Some rounding therefore happens before the dimensional weight is compared with the actual weight. Rounding rules differ by carrier and service, so always read the service guide for the lane you book.

Express courier 5000 vs air cargo 6000 vs LCL ocean: which rule applies?

Quick Answer: Express courier uses a 5000 divisor, IATA air cargo uses 6000, and LCL ocean freight bills one cubic meter as 1,000 kg. The same box can carry three different chargeable weights depending on the mode you book, which is why mode choice matters more than carton choice above roughly 70 kg.

Billable kilos per 1 m³ by transport mode

1,000 kgLCL ocean treats one cubic meter as a full revenue ton — five times the express courier figure, at a fraction of the rate per kilo.

Density decides the outcome. Below 200 kg/m³ you pay volumetric on express courier. Below 167 kg/m³ you pay volumetric on IATA air cargo. Above those thresholds, your scale weight wins and you pay actual kilos.

When should a small seller switch modes?

Stay on courier

Under about 70 kg chargeable, courier usually wins on total landed cost. You get door-to-door handling, a tracking number per piece, and simplified courier clearance in most Latin American markets. Transit from Miami to Cartagena or Santo Domingo runs 2–5 business days.

Move to air cargo or LCL

Between 70 and 300 kg, compare air cargo on a House Air Waybill. Above 2–3 CBM, run the LCL numbers. LCL bills by revenue ton, so a dense 1 CBM at 300 kg still bills as one ton — but the per-kilo cost collapses versus express.

The LCL "revenue ton" rule, also written W/M (weight or measurement), is the ocean equivalent of a DIM divisor. The carrier charges whichever is greater: one metric ton of weight, or one cubic meter of space.

AB Group Shipping runs weekly LCL consolidations out of Miami, Houston and Los Angeles into Cartagena, Callao, Puerto Cortés and Caucedo. Sellers who outgrow courier usually make the jump at around 300 kg of repeat monthly volume.

How do I measure and round my box correctly?

Quick Answer: Measure the sealed, packed carton at its widest points, including bulges, handles, straps and pallet overhang. Round each dimension up to the next whole centimeter or inch before you multiply. Carriers scan parcels with dimensioning machines at the hub, so your tape measure must match the sealed shape.

Measure after taping, never before. An over-stuffed carton bulges once it is sealed, and that bulge adds volumetric weight on every side it touches.

What counts as a dimension?

  • Wheels, handles and caster feet on crates or cases
  • Protective corner blocks, edge guards and wooden skids
  • Strapping that stands proud of the carton face
  • Pallet overhang — measure the pallet itself, standard 48 × 40 in footprint, plus deck height

Hub dimensioners at Miami, Memphis and Louisville scan every piece automatically. Laser arrays read the outer silhouette, not your declared figures. Disputes are almost always lost by the shipper who measured a flat-packed empty box.

How do multi-piece shipments work?

On courier and express services (FedEx, UPS, DHL Express), the carrier charges each box on the higher of its actual and dimensional weight, so run the comparison piece by piece. Comparing totals for the whole shipment is the air cargo (IATA) rule.

Rounding order matters too. Round dimensions up first, calculate, compare actual against volumetric, and only then round the chargeable result to the next 0.5 kg or whole pound.

💡

Pro Tip

Write the measured dimensions and the scale weight on both the commercial invoice and the courier label. Shipments with declared dimensions on the paperwork face far fewer reweigh adjustments, because the hub scan has something to reconcile against.

Same shipment, three packing scenarios: what changes on the invoice

Quick Answer: Three packing choices for the same 9 kg of goods produce chargeable weights of 24 kg, 15 kg and 10 kg. Nothing inside the box changed — only the carton did. Packing discipline is the single largest cost lever a small seller controls on a USA to Latin America courier shipment.

ScenarioDimensionsActual weightVolumetric (5000 / 139)Chargeablevs best case
A — Oversized retail carton60×50×40 cm (24×20×16 in)9 kg24 kg / 55.3 lb24 kg+140%
B — Right-sized carton50×40×30 cm (20×16×12 in)9 kg12 kg / 27.6 lb12 kg+20%
C — Vacuum-packed, consolidated40×30×25 cm (16×12×10 in)9.5 kg6 kg / 13.8 lb10 kgBest case

Scenario C flips the logic. The box is now dense enough that actual weight beats volumetric, which is exactly where you want to be. You stop paying for air.

58%Chargeable weight cut

Moving from Scenario A to Scenario C drops chargeable weight from 24 kg to 10 kg on identical contents. On a recurring monthly parcel to Bogotá or Lima, that difference compounds fast.

Which dimension-based surcharges hit USA to Latin America parcels?

Quick Answer: Oversize, additional handling, non-stackable and over-maximum-limit fees are triggered mainly by size. In 2026, FedEx and UPS apply additional handling to boxes over 10,368 in³ (6 cubic feet) and the large package surcharge to boxes over 17,280 in³ (10 cubic feet) or 110 lb; a box over 150 lb, 108 in long or 165 in of length plus girth is over the maximum.

These fees sit on top of chargeable weight. They are not included in the per-kilo rate, and they are easy to trip by accident.

  • Box volume above 10,368 in³ (6 cubic feet) — FedEx and UPS apply additional handling (2026)
  • Large package — box volume above 17,280 in³ (10 cubic feet) or weight above 110 lb on FedEx and UPS (2026); 165 in of length plus girth is the maximum size, not a bracket
  • Non-rigid or cylindrical packaging — tubes, drums, bagged goods cannot run on automated belts
  • Maximum weight per piece exceeded, typically 70 kg (150 lb) on express services
  • Non-stackable pieces on air cargo — the carrier may apply a volume penalty beyond the 6000 divisor

Auto parts are the classic Latin America surcharge trap. Bumpers, exhaust systems and body panels are light, long and awkward. They almost always price as volumetric and then collect an oversize fee on top. Our guide on Importing Auto Parts from USA to Guatemala: Full Guide covers the packing and classification side in detail.

⚠️

Disputing a reweigh

If the carrier adjusts your chargeable weight, request the hub dimensioner scan record — carriers retain the image and measurement. Keep your own photo of the sealed box with a tape measure visible in frame. File inside the carrier's claim window; check its length in the carrier's service terms. Without your own evidence, the scan always wins.

When a piece exceeds 70 kg or 120 cm on any side, stop forcing it through courier. Move it to air cargo on a House Air Waybill, or into one of our LCL consolidations. The economics flip hard at that point.

How does chargeable weight affect customs value, DAP and DDP?

Quick Answer: Freight cost is part of the CIF customs value in most of Latin America, so a higher chargeable weight raises the duty and VAT base, not just the shipping bill. Customs authorities such as DIAN (Colombia), SUNAT (Peru), SAT (Guatemala) and ANAM (Mexico) assess duties on goods value plus freight plus insurance.

This is the part most small sellers miss. A 24 kg chargeable weight instead of 10 kg inflates freight. Inflated freight inflates the dutiable CIF base. The duty and IVA then compound on top of your packing mistake.

Worked example: how the math runs

Say goods are invoiced at $500, freight is $226, and insurance is $10. CIF equals $736. Apply the destination's published duty rate — for Colombia, the U.S. International Trade Administration's guide (updated March 2026) gives three main levels: 0–5% on capital goods, industrial goods and raw materials not made in Colombia, 10% on manufactured goods, and 15–20% on consumer and sensitive goods. The rate for each HS code comes from Colombia's tariff schedule, which DIAN lets you look up.

At a 10% duty band: $736 × 10% = $73.60 duty. Colombia's IVA of 19% then applies to CIF plus duty: ($736 + $73.60) × 19% = $153.82. Total import charges: $227.42.

Now cut the freight by right-sizing the carton, and every line in that calculation drops. Duty rates and VAT rates vary by HS code and by country — confirm classification with a licensed customs broker before you price a sale.

Who absorbs the volumetric penalty under Incoterms 2020?

  • Whoever pays the freight absorbs the volumetric penalty, and the Incoterms 2020 term you agree decides who that is
  • Who pays duty and VAT also depends on the agreed term — confirm the split for your term with a licensed customs broker before you quote
  • Any quote that includes freight and import charges must be built on chargeable weight, never scale weight

DDP looks attractive to the buyer and dangerous to the seller. Price a DDP parcel on 9 kg scale weight when the carrier bills 24 kg, and the margin is gone before the box lands in Bogotá.

⚠️

De minimis thresholds vary by country

Courier simplified clearance regimes and de minimis values differ across Latin America, and several countries have tightened them since 2024. A parcel that cleared duty-free last year may be fully assessable now. Our USA to Central America International Courier: Customs Requirements & Compliance Guide breaks down the current requirements by country.

Your paperwork must match the measured parcel. The Factura Comercial, the HS code and any proof of origin all need consistent weights and piece counts. Courier preferential treatment does not require a certificate of origin: ANAM does not list one for Mexico's 17% and 19% courier rates on parcels from the US, Colombia's USD 200 duty exemption for express shipments needs none, and USMCA proves origin with nine data elements on an invoice or any other document. Our Free Courier Documents Calculator: USA to Peru 2026 shows exactly which documents SUNAT expects for each shipment type.

How do I cut chargeable weight and price my shipment now?

Quick Answer: Reduce chargeable weight by right-sizing cartons, vacuum packing soft goods, removing retail packaging, and consolidating several small boxes into one dense carton. Then run the real numbers: the calculator on this page prices your exact dimensions, origin gateway and Latin American destination in seconds.

Six tactics that actually move the number

  • Buy cartons in 5 cm increments so the box matches the goods, not the other way around
  • Fill voids with the goods themselves — socks inside shoes, small items inside appliances
  • Vacuum-bag textiles, bedding and clothing; it can cut their volume substantially
  • Remove retail shoe boxes and blister packs where the sale allows it
  • Flat-pack anything that disassembles safely
  • Consolidate small boxes into one dense carton before handover

The consolidation math

Three separate 30 × 30 × 30 cm boxes give 27,000 cm³ each. That is 5.4 kg volumetric per piece, 16.2 kg total. Repack the same goods into one 45 × 40 × 30 cm carton: 54,000 cm³, or 10.8 kg volumetric.

Same contents, 33% less chargeable weight, and one label instead of three.

Which gateway will your parcel use?

Origin gateway changes both price and transit time. Florida ships through Miami. Texas and the central states route through Houston. California and the Southwest go via Los Angeles. The Northeast moves through New York/New Jersey, the Southeast through Savannah, the Midwest by rail via Chicago, and the Pacific Northwest through Seattle.

Canadian origins follow the same logic: Ontario through Toronto, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces through Montreal, Western Canada through Vancouver.

How is the volumetric weight of a courier package calculated?+

Multiply length × width × height, then divide by the carrier's divisor: 5000 in centimeters and kilos, or 139 in inches and pounds for DHL, FedEx and UPS international services. Compare that result with the scale weight and pay the higher of the two. The calculator on this page does both conversions and the comparison automatically.

Why does the courier charge me more kilos than my box actually weighs?+

Because carriers bill chargeable weight, which is the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight. A light, bulky parcel occupies aircraft space that the carrier cannot sell to anyone else, so the space is converted into kilos using the DIM divisor. Shrinking the carton is the only way to lower that number.

What is the volumetric weight divisor for DHL, FedEx and UPS?+

DHL Express, FedEx International and UPS Worldwide all apply 5000 for centimeters and kilos, and 139 for inches and pounds, on international shipments. Since July 12, 2026, USPS uses 139 for parcels over 1,728 cubic inches, and IATA air cargo uses 6000. Divisors can change, so check the carrier's current service guide.

What is chargeable weight on an international shipment?+

Chargeable weight is the figure the carrier actually bills: the greater of the scale weight and the volumetric weight, rounded up to the next 0.5 kg, 1 kg or whole pound depending on the service. On courier and express services each box is billed on its own higher figure; air cargo compares the shipment total. It also feeds the freight amount inside your CIF customs value.

How can I reduce the volumetric weight of my shipment and pay less?+

Use the smallest carton the goods safely fit in, vacuum-pack textiles, strip retail packaging, and consolidate several small boxes into one dense carton. Moving from a 60×50×40 cm box to a 50×40×30 cm box cuts volumetric weight from 24 kg to 12 kg. Run both packing options through the calculator on this page before you tape anything shut.
