  • Airlines charge by chargeable weight: the higher of actual kilos and volumetric kilos.
  • Price per kilo drops at higher break weights, so adding weight can lower your total cost.
  • Panama charges 7% ITBMS on the CIF value plus all customs duties, fees and charges (Código Fiscal art. 1057-V, parágrafo 6); import duty depends on the tariff line, with a 15% maximum and about a 12% average since Panama joined the WTO in 1997.
  • Cargo that stays in the Colón Free Zone and is re-exported pays no import duty and no ITBMS (Gaceta Oficial No. 29914-A, 2023).

How Break Weights Cut Your Price

Carriers publish rates in weight bands, and the per-kilo rate steps down at each band. A shipment just below a band can cost the same total as one at the band, because the higher band carries a cheaper rate.

Small shipments pay a flat minimum charge per air waybill. That is why a 12 kg box can cost more per kilo than a 300 kg pallet. Consolidating weekly orders into one AWB is the simplest cost cut available.

All of these are airport-to-airport prices. You deliver to the departure terminal, and your consignee collects at Tocumen. Pickup, local delivery in Panama and customs clearance are billed separately.

How Does the Air Cargo Calculator to Panama Work?

Quick Answer: An air cargo calculator to Panama converts your dimensions, pieces and weight into chargeable kilos, then prices that against current lane rates. You enter origin city, destination (Tocumen), piece count, each piece's length, width, height and weight, commodity type and Incoterm. The tool returns an airport-to-airport price in seconds.

The inputs are short and the math runs instantly. Nothing on this page asks for your email first.

  1. Enter your origin ZIP code or city in the US or Canada.
  2. Select Tocumen International Airport (PTY) as the destination.
  3. Add the number of pieces and each piece's dimensions in cm or inches.
  4. Type the gross weight per piece — packaging and pallet included.
  5. Describe the commodity and mark whether the cargo is stackable.
  6. Pick your Incoterm so the quote matches your commercial invoice.

The Incoterm field matters more than most shippers expect. EXW and FCA change who pays origin handling. DAP and DDP pull Panamanian clearance and taxes into the quoted figure.

Shipping a home instead of commercial cargo? Use the Moving to Panama Cost Calculator: Instant Quotes (2026) for household goods, and the Car Shipping to Panama Calculator: Instant Quotes 2026 for vehicles. Those lanes price differently and never travel as general air cargo.

⚠️

An airport-to-airport price is not landed cost

A cheap per-kilo number still leaves out Tocumen terminal handling, your Panamanian customs broker's fee, import duty by tariff line and 7% ITBMS. Budget those before you compare two quotes.

What Is Volumetric Weight (Chargeable Weight)?

Volumetric weight is the space your cargo occupies, expressed in kilos. Chargeable weight is the greater of volumetric weight and actual scale weight. Air freight sells space, not mass, because an aircraft runs out of cubic meters long before it runs out of lift.

A pallet of pillows pays for its volume. A crate of bearings pays for its weight. The calculadora carga aérea a Panamá on this page runs both numbers and quotes the higher one, exactly as the airline will.

Four Mistakes That Break a Quote

  • Measuring the product carton instead of the finished pallet, including overhang and shrink wrap.
  • Forgetting the pallet's own weight — it counts toward the gross weight.
  • Entering net weight instead of gross weight.
  • Rounding dimensions down; follow your carrier's rounding rules.

How Do I Calculate the Volumetric Weight of a Shipment to Panama?

Quick Answer: Multiply length × width × height to get the cubic volume, then divide by the volumetric divisor your airline applies to get volumetric weight. Compare that figure with the actual scale weight and pay the higher one. That higher figure is your chargeable weight to Tocumen.

Three worked examples show how the rule behaves with real cargo.

Example 1 — metric pallet. A pallet measures 120 × 100 × 110 cm. That is 1,320,000 cm³. Divide it by your carrier's volumetric divisor; if the result is higher than the 150 kg scale weight, you pay the volumetric figure to Panama.

Example 2 — imperial crate. A crate measures 48 × 40 × 45 inches, or 86,400 in³. Divide it by your carrier's divisor for inches to get volumetric pounds and compare that with the actual 300 lb. Chargeable weight is the higher of the two.

Example 3 — dense cargo. Four boxes of auto parts measure 40 × 30 × 30 cm each and weigh 28 kg each. Together they take little space for 112 kg, so on dense cargo like this actual weight usually wins and you pay 112 kg.

Rounding follows carrier practice, not yours. Each carrier sets its own rounding rules for dimensions and weight, so ask yours. These small roundings matter on multi-piece consignments.

💡

Pro Tip

Ask your carrier for the height limit for lower-deck belly lift on the aircraft serving your lane. Taller or wider units need a main-deck freighter, which prices on a different rate structure and flies on fewer frequencies into Tocumen.

How Packing Changes Your Price Per Kilo

Re-palletizing is free money. Merging two loose stacks into one tight unit can cut volumetric kilos. The cargo weighs the same, but you buy less airspace.

Mark pallets stackable whenever the goods allow it. Non-stackable cargo is billed as if it filled the empty space above it. That single checkbox can double a quote on light freight. Industry rate guides such as Transporte Aéreo de Carga: Guía de Tarifas y Costes 2026 report the same volumetric logic across every major lane.

What Charges Does an Air Freight Quote to Panama Include?

Quick Answer: An air freight quote to Panama stacks several line items: base freight per chargeable kilo, fuel surcharge (FSC), security surcharge (SSC), AWB documentation fee, origin terminal handling, plus Tocumen handling, customs brokerage, import duty and 7% ITBMS at destination. All-in quotes bundle them; itemized quotes show each one.

The air waybill (AWB) is the carrier's contract of carriage. Panamanian customs matches it against your commercial invoice. The International Trade Administration lists the original commercial invoice sworn by the exporter and the bill of lading or air waybill as Panama's essential import documents.

All-in quote

One number covering freight and every origin surcharge. Easy to approve internally and easy to compare between forwarders. The risk is that it hides which surcharges move with fuel, so you cannot see why next month's rate changed.

Itemized quote

Each line shown separately: base rate, FSC, SSC, AWB fee, handling. Harder to read, far easier to audit. Ask for itemization when you ship weekly — you can then track which component drove a price increase.

⚠️

Check storage terms before the flight lands

Storage terms at Tocumen depend on the ground handler. Confirm free time and storage charges with your Panamanian broker before the aircraft departs, not after.

How Long Does Air Freight Take From Miami to Panama?

Quick Answer: Air freight from Miami to Tocumen flies in about three hours, and standard airport-to-airport service runs 1–3 days terminal to terminal, depending on the cut-off you hit. From Los Angeles and the West Coast, expect an extra day for the connection. Clearance time at Tocumen depends on your broker and the commodity.

Cut-off time and departure time are not the same thing. Cargo tendered after the terminal cut-off rolls to the next flight, even though the aircraft is still on the ground. Missing a cut-off by thirty minutes can cost you a full day.

  • Miami and Florida: the fastest lane into PTY, with daily lift and short connections.
  • Houston and the central states: add one connection to the routing.
  • Los Angeles, the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest: usually route through a hub, adding about a day.
  • Northeast and Midwest: cargo often trucks or consolidates into Miami first.

For a side-by-side view of Central American transit windows by mode, compare with Shipping Times USA to El Salvador 2026: 1-25 Days. The same cut-off logic applies across the region.

We do not promise clearance times. Panama's Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas processes declarations electronically through the SIGA system. Duration depends on your documents, the commodity and whether customs selects the shipment for inspection.

💡

Pro Tip

Plan around the peaks. Q4 retail season and perishable harvest peaks tighten available lift into Latin America and push per-kilo rates up. Book space one week earlier than usual from October through December.

Special Cargo: Perishables, Pharma, Batteries

Temperature-controlled cargo, pharmaceuticals and dangerous goods carry their own surcharges. They also need extra documentation and approved packaging. The calculator routes these commodities to a custom quote instead of an automatic price.

Lithium batteries and other dangerous goods need packing, labeling and paperwork that meet the air dangerous goods rules. AB Group Shipping quotes them after review by our operations team, never automatically. Submitting the UN number and packing group upfront speeds that review.

Is It Cheaper to Send Cargo to Panama by Air or by Sea?

Quick Answer: Sea freight is cheaper per kilo; air freight is cheaper on time and on small, dense, high-value shipments. Below roughly 150–200 kg, air usually wins on total landed cost once storage and handling are counted. Above about 2 CBM of low-value goods, ocean LCL or a full container almost always wins.

The decision rule is simple. High value-to-weight cargo flies: electronics, spare parts, samples, pharma. Low value-to-weight cargo sails: furniture, tile, bulk packaging, building materials.

Consolidated ocean pricing works per cubic meter, not per kilo. Our guide on LCL Shipping USA to Guatemala 2026: Instant Quotes shows how that math works on a comparable Central American lane.

When air still wins

Count the cost of waiting. 14 to 21 extra days of inventory, port storage risk and a missed production line can erase an ocean saving. Urgent spare parts almost always justify the air premium.

When ocean wins clearly

Volume kills air freight economics. Once your shipment passes about 2 CBM of low-value goods, the volumetric weight charge grows faster than the ocean rate. Ship it on the water and plan the lead time.

Which Incoterms 2020 Apply to Air Shipments to Panama?

Quick Answer: Incoterms 2020 decide what your air freight quote actually covers. EXW puts everything on the buyer; FCA ends the seller's job at the airport; CPT and CIP include flight to Tocumen; DAP and DDP include delivery in Panama and differ on who handles import clearance, duty and ITBMS — confirm the split in your sales contract and with a licensed customs broker.

IncotermPickup & exportAir freightInsuranceImport clearance, duty & ITBMSDelivery in Panama
EXWBuyerBuyerBuyerBuyerBuyer
FCASellerBuyerBuyerBuyerBuyer
CPTSellerSellerConfirm in contractBuyerBuyer
CIPSellerSellerSeller (confirm cover)BuyerBuyer
DAPSellerSellerSeller's choiceBuyerSeller
DDPSellerSellerSeller's choiceSellerSeller

FCA is the clean default for air freight. The seller hands cargo over at the departure terminal and the AWB documents the transfer. Risk passes cleanly, and both sides know what they bought.

CIP and CPT treat cargo insurance differently, so check what your contract requires the seller to insure and at what level. Buyers who assume the seller insured the cargo can discover a gap only after a damage claim.

⚠️

DDP into Panama looks easy and is not

Under DDP the seller carries Panamanian import-side liability. You need a broker licensed by the Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas acting on your behalf, plus a way to handle duty assessments you cannot control. Most US exporters are better served by DAP or FCA.

Select your Incoterm inside the calculator so the quote matches the commercial terms printed on your invoice. A mismatch between the quote and the invoice creates disputes at clearance.

What Taxes and Documents Apply to Air Imports Into Panama?

Quick Answer: Panama charges ITBMS at 7% on the CIF value plus all customs duties, fees and charges, under Código Fiscal art. 1057-V, parágrafo 6. Import duty depends on each item's tariff line, capped at 15% with an overall average near 12% since Panama's 1997 WTO accession. Customs brokers are licensed by the ANA.

Here is the math, as a worked example only. Your own rate depends on HS classification.

  • CIF value (goods + insurance + freight): $10,000
  • Import duty at a 10% tariff line: $1,000
  • Taxable base for ITBMS: $10,000 + $1,000 = $11,000
  • ITBMS at 7%: $770
  • Total taxes in this example: $1,770

Documents are fewer than most importers expect. The Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas and the US International Trade Administration list two essential import documents.

  • Original commercial invoice, sworn by the exporter.
  • Air waybill (the air-freight equivalent of the bill of lading).
  • Certificate of origin — required when you claim tariff preference (ITA, 2026).
  • Packing list — not on the mandatory list, but brokers and handlers normally ask for one.

Declarations are filed electronically in the customs SIGA system. Customs brokers in Panama are licensed by the ANA under Decreto Ley No. 1 de 2008. Apostilled US documents are recognized in Panama under the Hague Convention.

⚠️

Classification is a broker's job

Duty classification, importer registration and permit questions belong to a customs broker licensed by the Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas. AB Group Shipping is a freight forwarder, not legal counsel. Confirm anything not published by the ANA before you buy or ship.

Definitive Import or Colón Free Zone: Which Costs Less?

Quick Answer: Cargo that stays inside the Colón Free Zone and is re-exported pays no Panamanian import duty and no ITBMS, under the 2023 reform of Ley 8 de 2016. A definitive import into Panamanian territory pays duty by tariff line plus 7% ITBMS. The right choice depends on where the goods are finally sold.

Best forGoods sold inside PanamaRegional distribution stock

Think of the Colón Free Trade Zone as a re-export hub, much like a US bonded warehouse (ITA/export.gov). Importers serving Colombia, Ecuador and the Caribbean often hold stock in Colón and release it in smaller lots, instead of paying Panamanian tax on inventory they never sell locally.

Air cargo still lands at Tocumen even when the goods are destined for Colón. The inland move and the free zone operator's storage are separate costs. They are not part of your air freight rate, so never assume a quote covers them.

💡

Four ways to cut your per-kilo cost

Consolidate weekly orders into one AWB to reach the next break weight. Re-palletize to cut volumetric kilos. Choose deferred service when the delivery date allows it. Switch from EXW to FCA so origin handling is controlled and priced upfront.

The same calculator logic prices every worldwide lane we run, not just Panama. See Free Moving Cost Calculator: USA to United Kingdom 2026 for how it handles a transatlantic route.

Air cargo to Panama rewards shippers who measure carefully, pack tightly and plan around cut-off times. With thousands of shipments moved across the USA–Latin America corridor, AB Group Shipping prices every gateway from Miami to Los Angeles into Tocumen. Enter your pieces, dimensions and gross weight in the calculator on this page — the calculadora carga aérea a Panamá returns your chargeable weight and an airport-to-airport price in seconds, with no email and no follow-up calls.

How much does it cost to ship air cargo to Panama per kilo?+

It depends on your chargeable weight, your departure gateway and the month, because airline rates and fuel surcharges reset regularly. Small shipments pay a flat minimum charge, and the price per kilo drops as the shipment crosses each break weight. Check the live price table on this page and run the calculator for your exact dimensions.

How do I calculate the volumetric weight of a shipment to Panama?+

Multiply length × width × height and divide by the volumetric divisor your airline applies to get volumetric weight. Compare that number with the actual scale weight and pay the higher of the two. A bulky pallet can be charged on its volumetric weight even if the scale reads much less.

What taxes do I pay when importing goods into Panama by air?+

Panama charges ITBMS at 7% on the CIF value plus all customs duties, fees and charges on the imported goods, under Código Fiscal art. 1057-V, parágrafo 6. Import duty itself depends on each item's tariff line; since Panama joined the WTO in 1997 tariffs are capped at 15%, with an overall average near 12%. Confirm your specific classification with a customs broker licensed by the Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas.

What documents do I need to clear air cargo at Tocumen airport?+

Panama's customs authority and the US ITA guide list two essential import documents: the original commercial invoice sworn by the exporter and the air waybill. A certificate of origin is required when you claim tariff preference. A packing list is not on the mandatory list, but brokers and ground handlers normally ask for one.

Is it cheaper to send cargo to Panama by air or by sea?+

Sea freight is cheaper per kilo, air freight is cheaper on time and on small dense shipments. Below roughly 150–200 kg, air usually wins on total landed cost once minimum charges and storage are counted; above about 2 cubic meters of low-value goods, ocean consolidation wins. Run both modes in the calculator on this page and compare the landed numbers.
