Shipping from another state? Which port to read

Each port in the table is the one that cargo from these states usually leaves through. Miami: Florida. Los Angeles: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska ship through Houston; New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia and West Virginia ship through New York / New Jersey; Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama ship through Savannah; Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota ship through Chicago (rail); Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska ship through Seattle / Tacoma: those ports are not in the table yet. We pick up in every state, and the calculator finds the best port from your city.

What Is a Mexico Air Freight Calculator and How Does It Work?

Quick Answer: A Mexico air freight calculator is a pricing tool that converts your cargo's dimensions and weight into chargeable kilos, then applies the per-kilo rate for your origin airport and destination. It returns an airport-to-airport price in seconds, with surcharges included, instead of a line-item quote you wait days for.

Three inputs decide the whole price. Get them right and the output is accurate.

  • Total gross weight — every carton, plus the pallet, plus the wrap.
  • Outer dimensions — the footprint the airline actually loads, not your carton size.
  • Origin airport — the single biggest driver of price after weight.

The calculator prices airport-to-airport freight plus air surcharges. It does not price Mexican duties, IVA, agente aduanal fees or last-mile delivery in Mexico. Those are separate, and we explain them further down.

The tool on this page is pre-set for carga aérea a méxico. No email, no sales call, no waiting. The same instant-rate format runs on other lanes too — see Shipping to Nigeria Calculator: Instant 2026 Rates for a long-haul example.

💡

Pro Tip

Measure after the pallet is built and wrapped. Shippers who quote carton dimensions and then wrap a 15 cm overhang get re-weighed at the terminal. A re-measure at origin can raise the chargeable weight after you already accepted the quote.

How Do You Calculate the Volumetric Weight of Air Cargo to Mexico?

Quick Answer: Multiply length × width × height in centimeters and divide by the volumetric divisor your carrier applies. Air cargo and express courier services can use different divisors, so the same box can bill at a different weight — confirm the divisor on your quote.

The formula has three equivalent forms. Use whichever matches your measuring tape.

  1. Measure length, width and height of the built pallet in centimeters.
  2. Round up each dimension to the next whole centimeter — carriers do.
  3. Multiply the three figures, then divide by the carrier's divisor for kilos.
  4. Cross-check the result against the chargeable weight shown on your quote.

Measure the outside of the skid, including the shrink-wrap overhang. Airlines measure the footprint they load into the aircraft. Your carton dimensions are irrelevant once the pallet is built.

Which Divisor Applies to Your Shipment to Mexico?

Not every service uses the same divisor. The divisor depends on who carries the cargo.

  • Consolidated air cargo on a master AWB: the airline's air cargo divisor.
  • DHL, FedEx and UPS parcels: their own published divisors, which can differ from air cargo.
  • Charter and heavy-lift: negotiated, often by occupied floor position rather than by kilo.

Our reference shipment — 100 kg in 0.6 m³ — bills on actual weight. Confirm it against the volumetric weight your carrier calculates.

What Is Chargeable Weight in Air Freight? A Worked Example

Quick Answer: Chargeable weight is the higher of actual gross weight and volumetric weight, and it is the number your rate per kilo multiplies. A 120 kg pallet measuring 120 × 100 × 110 cm has 1.32 m³, so volumetric weight is 220 kg. The airline bills 220 kg, not 120 kg.

Take a real case: one pallet of consumer electronics, Shenzhen to Mexico City. Actual gross weight is 120 kg. Volume is 1.32 m³, so volumetric weight is 220 kg. You pay for 100 kg of pure air.

Now reverse it. Our Miami lane moves 100 kg in 0.6 m³ — machine parts, spares, dense packaging. Volumetric weight matches actual weight, so the chargeable weight stays at 100 kg. That is why the same 100 kg can cost very different money.

The rule of thumb is simple. Dense cargo pays by weight. Light, bulky cargo pays by volume. Mexican freight buyers call this calculation peso volumétrico carga aérea, and it decides most quotes.

How Should You Palletize to Pay Less?

  • Build to 100 × 120 cm footprints that fit standard lower-deck ULDs.
  • Keep height under the belly-hold limit for narrow-body aircraft on short US–Mexico sectors.
  • Never let cartons overhang the skid — the overhang gets measured and billed.
  • Strip retail packaging voids and double-stack inside one skid where the product allows.
⚠️

Cutting volume can create a different fee

Light cargo that is long or tall can trigger an oversize or out-of-gauge handling charge, even after you reduce cubic meters. A 3-meter piece may not fit a narrow-body belly at all. Send dimensions before you book, not after the truck leaves.

How Much Does Air Freight to Mexico Cost Per Kilo in 2026?

Quick Answer: Air freight to Mexico is priced per chargeable kilo, with the rate per kilo generally falling as weight rises across the airline's weight breaks. With AB Group Shipping, 100 kg at 0.6 m³ airport to airport runs from $975 out of Miami and $1,293 out of Los Angeles (September 2026 quote).

Those two figures come from our quoting system on 28 September 2026. Air rates move every month with fuel and capacity. The price table under the opening answer updates itself, and the calculator on this page prices your exact origin today.

$975 for 100 kg works out to $9.75 per chargeable kilo airport to airport from Miami, September 2026. The same shipment out of Los Angeles prices at $12.93 per kilo. That gap is why your gateway matters more than your carrier.

Airlines quote on a break-point ladder. The rate per kilo drops as weight rises, which creates a useful trick.

Your gateway depends on where the cargo starts. Florida ships via Miami. Texas and the central states via Houston. California and the Southwest via Los Angeles. The Northeast via New York/New Jersey. The Southeast via Savannah or Atlanta. The Midwest via Chicago. The Pacific Northwest via Seattle. Any other US origin prices approx. off the nearest listed gateway.

Capacity tightens in predictable windows. Q4 e-commerce, Hot Sale season and automotive launch cycles squeeze belly space into MEX, NLU, GDL and MTY. Book earlier in those weeks or expect a surcharge. Industry rate guides such as this air cargo rates and cost guide track the same seasonal pattern.

Which Charges Make Up a Mexico Air Freight Quote?

Quick Answer: A valid air freight quote to Mexico itemizes base freight per chargeable kilo, fuel surcharge, security surcharge, AWB fee, origin handling and export documentation. Destination adds terminal handling, storage after free time, prevalidación, DTA, IGI and IVA. An "all-in" number that hides these lines is not comparable to an itemized one.

Here is the full cost stack, and who carries each line under Incoterms 2020.

ChargeWhere it appliesWho pays under EXW / FCAWho pays under DAP / DDP
Pickup and export clearanceOriginBuyer / SellerSeller
Origin handling + AWB feeOrigin airportBuyerSeller

Prevalidación + agente aduanalMexican customsBuyerSeller (DDP) / Buyer (DAP)
DTA, IGI and IVAMexican customsBuyerSeller (DDP) / Buyer (DAP)

Check that the Incoterm on your quote suits air freight, and confirm it with your forwarder or a licensed customs agent.

DAP into Mexico

The Mexican buyer clears on its own pedimento. It pays the import IVA and can credit that IVA under the Ley del Impuesto al Valor Agregado. Clean, and the standard choice for commercial imports.

DDP into Mexico

The seller carries import-side liability in a country where it is usually not registered. Without an RFC and padrón registration, DDP stalls at the terminal. It looks simple on paper and rarely is.

A quote you can actually compare must state these items. Check every one before you accept it.

  • The chargeable weight used, not just the gross weight
  • Rate per kilo, currency and validity date
  • Incoterm and the airport pair in IATA codes
  • A clear line saying duties and IVA are excluded

Currency matters too. Freight is quoted in USD, while Mexican fees and taxes settle in pesos. The MXN/USD rate on clearance day changes your landed cost. Buyers who want an all-in door price on small shipments usually compare against courier pricing instead — the same logic we cover in Courier Calculator Honduras: Instant Rates (2026).

What Taxes Do You Pay to Import Air Cargo into Mexico?

Quick Answer: Mexican imports pay IVA at 16% on the customs value plus the import duty and other charges payable on import (Ley del IVA art. 27). Import duty (IGI) depends on each item's tariff classification — there is no single rate. The customs processing fee (DTA) is 8 per thousand of customs value on an ordinary import.

Start with IVA. The rate is 16% on customs value plus IGI plus the other charges payable on import, per article 27 of the Ley del IVA. The 8% northern-border stimulus is not granted for importing goods, so every import pays the general rate (Decreto DOF 31-12-2018).

IGI depends on classification. Mexico uses an 8-digit fracción arancelaria plus a 2-digit NICO, whose first six digits are the HS code, declared on the pedimento (SNICE, Secretaría de Economía). US-origin goods can enter at 0% IGI when USMCA origin is certified, according to the International Trade Administration.

Then the fixed government fees:

  • DTA: 8 per thousand of customs value on an ordinary import; a fixed MXN 461.61 per operation in 2026 for goods exempt under the Ley Aduanera and for temporary imports (Ley Federal de Derechos art. 49).
  • Prevalidación: MXN 350.00 plus IVA per pedimento (RGCE 2026 rule 1.8.3).
  • Agente aduanal fees: vary by agent — ask for them in writing.

Worked example (illustration only, not a quote). A US-origin shipment invoiced at $12,000 FOB, flown Miami to NLU at $975 with $65 insurance. Customs value, under the Ley Aduanera, is FOB plus freight and insurance to the Mexican airport: $13,040.

  1. Apply IGI: 0% with USMCA origin certified = $0.
  2. Calculate IVA: 16% of $13,040 = $2,086.40, before adding other import charges to the base.
  3. Add DTA: 8 per thousand of $13,040 = $104.32.
  4. Add prevalidación: MXN 350.00 plus IVA per pedimento.

Without USMCA origin, the IGI from your fracción arancelaria is added before the IVA base is calculated. USMCA no longer requires a certificate of origin — nine data elements on the invoice or another document prove origin, including the goods description and the 6-digit HS classification (trade.gov, "USMCA Day One").

⚠️

Confirm your classification before you ship

Your specific fraction, any required permits and valuation questions sit outside published rates. Confirm them with us or with a licensed agente aduanal before you buy or book. The official requirement list is published by the US government in its Mexico import requirements and documentation guide.

What Documents and Registrations Does Mexican Customs Require?

Quick Answer: Mexican formal imports require a pedimento, the guía aérea (AWB), a commercial invoice, a packing list, USMCA certification where claimed, and NOM certificates or permits where required (Ley Aduanera). The consignee must hold an RFC and be registered in the padrón de importadores before the pedimento can clear (SAT).

The guía aérea — the air waybill — is the carrier's contract and receipt. It names the shipper, consignee, airports, piece count, chargeable weight, rate and handling instructions.

Pedimento completion follows Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026, published by SAT in the DOF on 15 January 2026. Your agente aduanal fills it, but the data comes from your invoice.

  • Factura comercial, matching the AWB piece count and weight exactly
  • Packing list with carton-level detail
  • Guía aérea (AWB)
  • USMCA certification data where origin is claimed
  • NOM certificates or prior permits where the classification requires them

Register the consignee first. SAT requires the RFC and padrón de importadores registration for formal imports. Plan it before the freight departs, not after it lands at a bonded terminal.

⚠️

Declared value is not a lever

Understating declared value to reduce duty is a customs offense under the Ley Aduanera. SAT can also seize formally imported merchandise lacking a pedimento years later during an audit (Ley Aduanera, reform DOF 19-11-2025). Keep the pedimento and the invoice together in your records.

Which Mexican Airports Receive Your Air Cargo?

Quick Answer: Mexico's main cargo gateways are Mexico City (MEX), Felipe Ángeles (NLU), Guadalajara (GDL), Monterrey (MTY), Querétaro (QRO) and Bajío (BJX). Each has bonded terminals where cargo stays under customs control until the pedimento clears. Under Ley Aduanera art. 15-V, bonded warehouses give two days of free storage on imports, counted in calendar days from the day after the consignee is notified that the goods entered the warehouse — not from arrival.

Match the airport to the cargo type:

  • NLU and MEX: general and consolidated freight into the Valle de México.
  • MTY: industrial inputs and northern distribution.
  • QRO and BJX: automotive and aerospace programs in the Bajío.
  • GDL: electronics and pharmaceutical flows.

Our quoted lane delivers airport to airport at NLU. The customer collects there. Onward delivery and destination charges sit outside ABGS freight and price separately.

Cargo at a bonded terminal stays under customs control until the pedimento clears (Ley Aduanera). Storage accrues while your broker works, which is why registration delays cost real money.

💡

Ask for the terminal tariff in advance

Almacenaje and handling charges vary by handler and airport. Request the current schedule before the flight lands, so the free-time window is a plan and not a surprise.

Which Cargo Pays Air Surcharges and Needs Special Permits?

Quick Answer: Dangerous goods, lithium batteries, perishables and pharmaceuticals carry handling surcharges on top of the per-kilo rate and move under IATA DGR packing rules. Separately, COFEPRIS, SENASICA and SEMARNAT may require import permits in Mexico depending on the tariff classification, independent of the freight cost.

Expect extra lines on the quote for these categories:

  • DGR handling and documentation fees
  • Lithium battery sections PI 965–970, with state-of-charge limits
  • Temperature-controlled and active containers for pharma
  • Perishable handling and cool-chain at both ends
  • Oversize or out-of-gauge pieces needing special loading

Permits are a separate track. COFEPRIS, SENASICA and SEMARNAT may require import permits depending on the fracción arancelaria, per the USDA FAS FAIRS report on Mexico. Confirm the permit before booking — the flight will not wait.

For reference on the export side, the Mexican government portal lists the phytosanitary export certificate at MXN 558 (about US$30), with an answer within 15 business days of the request and a possible physical inspection.

These cargo types are not auto-priced. The element on this page becomes a custom quote request, so a specialist can rate the handling and permits properly.

⚠️

One hidden battery stops the whole pallet

An undeclared lithium battery or aerosol inside a general-cargo pallet gets the entire shipment offloaded. The airline then rebills storage while you rebuild and re-document. Declare every cell, every pressurized can, every flammable liquid.

Air vs Ocean vs Cross-Border Trucking: Which Should You Choose?

Quick Answer: Air wins on urgency and high-value density; ocean wins on cost per kilo above roughly 1,000 kg of non-urgent cargo; cross-border trucking wins from US inland points into northern and central Mexico. Ocean port-to-port transit runs 7 days from Los Angeles, 14 from Miami and New Jersey, and 29 from Houston.

Laredo–Nuevo Laredo handles the highest truck volume on the US–Mexico border and sits about 140 miles from Monterrey, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. For Texas and Midwest origins, trucking often beats both air and ocean.

Plan the Mexican leg too. Domestic trucking requires the Complemento Carta Porte inside the carrier's CFDI (SAT). Build that into any door-delivery plan before the cargo lands.

Choose air when…

The line is down, the customer is waiting, or the goods are dense and valuable. Under about 1,000 kg, air freight to Mexico stays competitive once you price the cost of delay.

Choose ocean when…

You have two to four weeks and real volume. Above 1,000 kg the per-kilo gap widens fast, and Los Angeles to Mexico runs 7 days port to port.

Vehicles never move by air and price on a completely separate line — see Car Shipping to Mexico Calculator: 7-Day Transit 2026 and Cars Per Container Calculator: 1-4 Cars, 2026 Rates. Canadian origins routing through Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver follow the same logic as in our Car Shipping Calculator: Canada to Argentina 2026.

How do you calculate the volumetric weight of air cargo to Mexico?+

Multiply length × width × height in centimeters and divide by the volumetric divisor your carrier applies. Compare the result with the actual gross weight and the airline bills whichever is higher. Express couriers may use a different divisor, so the same box can bill a different number of kilos on a parcel service.

How many days does an air shipment from the United States to Mexico City take?+

Air cargo from major US gateways reaches Mexico City on next-flight-out or second-flight services, typically landing within one to three days of tender. Customs clearance then depends on your agente aduanal, the pedimento and whether the shipment is selected for physical inspection. By comparison, ocean port-to-port transit runs 7 days from Los Angeles, 14 from Miami and New Jersey, and 29 from Houston.

What taxes do I pay when importing air cargo into Mexico?+

You pay IVA at 16% on the customs value plus the import duty and the other charges payable on import, under article 27 of the Ley del IVA. Import duty (IGI) depends on the tariff classification of each item, so there is no single rate; US-origin goods can enter at 0% IGI when USMCA origin is certified. The DTA customs processing fee is 8 per thousand of customs value on an ordinary import, and electronic prevalidation of each pedimento costs MXN 350.00 plus IVA under RGCE 2026 rule 1.8.3.

Do I need to be registered in the padrón de importadores to receive air cargo in Mexico?+

Yes. Mexican customs requires the consignee's RFC and registration in the importers' registry (padrón de importadores) for formal imports, according to SAT. Register before the cargo flies, because a shipment sitting at a bonded terminal stays under customs control and accrues storage while the paperwork catches up.

When is air freight worth more than ocean freight for importing into Mexico?+

Air freight is worth it when the cargo is urgent, high value relative to its weight, or dense enough that volumetric weight does not punish you — typically under about 1,000 kg. Ocean becomes cheaper per kilo as volume grows and the calendar allows two to four weeks of transit. Run both through the calculator on this page before you decide; the per-kilo rate drops at the airline's weight break points.
