  • Express courier is the fastest door-to-door option to Mexico at 2-5 business days; ocean freight is the cheapest per kilo but runs 7-29 days port to port depending on your US gateway.
  • Ocean transit with AB Group Shipping, port to port, full container: Los Angeles 7 days, Miami 14, New Jersey 14, Houston 29 — your region decides your gateway and your clock.
  • Customs is the variable nobody quotes: ANAM runs the customs offices, the pedimento must be filed per Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026, and the consignee needs an RFC and padrón de importadores registration for formal imports.
  • Incoterms change the calendar: the term you agree decides who files the pedimento and pays the import charges, so confirm it in your contract — and the import VAT on the buyer's pedimento can be credited by the importer.

The question "cuánto tarda un envío a México" has no single answer because two clocks run at once: the transport clock and the customs clock. This guide separates them mode by mode, so you can plan a real delivery date instead of a hopeful one.

Shipping from another state? Which port to read

Each port in the table is the one that cargo from these states usually leaves through. Miami: Florida. Houston: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. New Jersey: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia and West Virginia. California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii ship through Los Angeles / Long Beach; Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama ship through Savannah; Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota ship through Chicago (rail); Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska ship through Seattle / Tacoma: those ports are not in the table yet. How Long Does Shipping from the USA to Mexico Take?

Quick Answer: Shipping from the USA to Mexico takes 2-5 business days by express courier, 3-7 days by air freight, 2-7 days by cross-border truck, and 7-29 days by ocean port to port. Customs clearance in Mexico adds time on top of every one of those numbers.

Each mode has its own clock. The table below shows what that clock actually measures.

ModeTypical transitBest use caseClock excludes
Express courier2-5 business daysDocuments, samples, parcels under 70 kgCustoms holds

Shippers confuse two different numbers. Transit time is port to port or airport to airport. Door-to-door time adds pickup, export handling, customs clearance and the last mile inside Mexico.

Our September 2026 quoting data gives these port-to-port full container transits: Los Angeles 7 days, Miami 14, New Jersey 14, Houston 29. Those are the ocean legs only. The price table under the opening answer updates itself every month, so check it rather than memorizing a figure.

How Many Days Does DHL, FedEx, UPS or USPS Take to Mexico?

Quick Answer: Express couriers typically deliver from the USA to Mexico in 2-5 business days door to door. Economy courier services run 5-8 business days, and postal services such as USPS handed to Correos de México run 10-25 days. Customs selection can add days to any of them.

Carrier / serviceTypical business daysService guarantee
DHL Express Worldwide2-4Money-back on service failure
FedEx International Priority2-4Money-back on service failure
FedEx International Economy4-6Money-back guarantee suspended (as of October 2026)
UPS Worldwide Expedited2-5Day-definite
USPS Priority Mail International10-25No guarantee
Estafeta (domestic leg)1-3 after releaseNo international guarantee
Paquetexpress (domestic leg)1-4 after releaseNo international guarantee

The delay split is structural. Express courier shipments and postal items follow different customs channels, and the postal route is usually slower.

Read the guarantee carefully. It covers carrier service failure only — never a customs hold, a missing commercial invoice or an incorrect RFC.

How Long Does Air Freight from the USA to Mexico Take?

Quick Answer: Air freight from the USA to Mexico takes 3-7 days airport to airport, including export handling, flight, and arrival breakdown. Add 1-3 days for pickup at origin and the same again for customs release and trucking inside Mexico. Air makes sense above roughly 100 kg of urgent cargo.

Pick the right arrival airport and you cut days off the inland leg. NLU (Felipe Ángeles) and MEX (AICM) serve the Valley of Mexico, GDL serves Jalisco, MTY serves Nuevo León, and QRO serves the Bajío.

Where the three hidden days go

Cargo cutoff is not flight departure. Your freight must be at the terminal hours before the aircraft moves, and that gap is a full working day on many lanes.

Consolidation at the origin terminal eats a second day. Your pallets wait for the rest of the ULD. Then the bonded warehouse breakdown after arrival eats a third, before the broker can even present the file.

⚠️

The free storage clock does not start on landing

Under Ley Aduanera Art. 15-V, bonded warehouses must give two days of free storage on imports. For air and sea imports, that period runs in calendar days from the day after the consignee is notified that the goods entered the warehouse — not from touchdown. Confirm storage and handling fees with your agente aduanal before the cargo lands.

Air wins on total cost in three situations: short shelf life, high value per kilo, or a production line waiting on parts. Below those, ocean is almost always cheaper per kilo.

Your region sets your departure airport. The Northeast usually flies out of New York/New Jersey. The Southwest flies out of Los Angeles. Texas and the central states fly out of Houston.

How Long Does Ocean Freight to Mexico Take (FCL and LCL)?

Quick Answer: Ocean freight to Mexico takes 7-29 days port to port with AB Group Shipping, depending on your US gateway: Los Angeles 7 days, Miami 14, New Jersey 14, Houston 29 (September 2026 transit data). LCL adds 5-10 days for consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination.

Which US gateway matches your region?

  • Florida → PortMiami
  • Texas and the central states → Port Houston
  • California and the Southwest → Los Angeles/Long Beach
  • The Northeast → Port of New York and New Jersey
  • The Southeast → Savannah
  • The Midwest → rail to the coast through Chicago

If your city is not on that list, your shipment prices and transits approx. off the nearest listed origin, with the departure port named on your quote. Phoenix, for example, moves approx. as Los Angeles. Denver moves approx. as Houston.

Which Mexican port receives your cargo?

Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas handle Pacific and Bajío cargo. Veracruz and Altamira handle Gulf and central Mexico. A Los Angeles sailing almost always discharges on the Pacific side.

LCL (Less than Container Load)

LCL usually wins under roughly 10 CBM. You pay per cubic meter and share the box. The trade-off is time: consolidation at origin and deconsolidation in Mexico add 5-10 days. Your cargo sits at a bonded CFS under customs control until the pedimento clears, so nothing moves on your schedule alone.

FCL (Full Container Load)

FCL wins above roughly 10 CBM, and always for vehicles and full household moves. The container is sealed at origin and opened in Mexico. No co-loader cargo, no deconsolidation queue, and a cleaner customs file because the box holds one importer's goods.

Families shipping household goods rather than commercial cargo should read our Moving Abroad From the USA: Complete Guide before booking a container size.

How Long Does Cross-Border Trucking from the USA to Mexico Take?

Quick Answer: Cross-border trucking to Mexico takes 2-7 days from most US origins, depending on distance to the border and the crossing used. Laredo-Nuevo Laredo handles the highest truck volume of any US-Mexico crossing and sits roughly 140 miles from Monterrey, which shortens northern Mexico deliveries.

CrossingServesTypical total transit
Laredo – Nuevo LaredoMonterrey, Saltillo, central Mexico2-6 days
El Paso – Ciudad JuárezChihuahua, northern corridor2-5 days
Otay Mesa – TijuanaBaja California2-4 days

According to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data, Laredo–Nuevo Laredo carries the highest truck volume on the border. That volume is why Monterrey distribution is so fast, and why buffer matters at peak.

Where the clock stops on a truck move

A US carrier rarely drives the whole way. The load transfers to a drayage carrier at the border, then to a Mexican carrier for the domestic leg. Every handoff is a place the clock stops.

The Mexican leg has a document trigger. The Complemento Carta Porte is issued by the Mexican carrier inside its CFDI electronic invoice to cover domestic transport, per SAT. A missing Carta Porte stalls cargo after clearance, not before — which is the worst possible moment.

💡

Build buffer, not a guarantee

Official border crossing wait times are not published in a form we will quote as fact. Plan with a one- to two-day buffer on cross-border truck lanes instead of promising a customer a fixed hour. Readers moving parts and industrial cargo across LatAm borders will find the same logic in our Importing Auto Parts from USA to Guatemala: Full Guide.

How Long Does a Package Stay in Customs in Mexico?

Quick Answer: Customs time in Mexico depends on the pedimento, not the carrier. The pedimento is the Mexican customs declaration, completed under Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026 published by SAT. ANAM runs the customs offices. A clean file with correct classification and a registered importer moves fastest.

The pedimento is the declaration that releases your goods. Its completion is governed by Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026, published by SAT in the DOF on 15 January 2026. The RGCE 2026 rules are in force from 1 January to 31 December 2026.

What is the semáforo fiscal?

The semáforo fiscal is the selection mechanism under the Ley Aduanera, last reformed in the DOF of 19 November 2025. Green releases the goods without physical inspection. Red triggers a reconocimiento aduanero, a physical inspection.

Be careful with what you read elsewhere. Do not rely on inspection percentages or fixed delay figures quoted for a red light. Confirm expectations with a licensed agente aduanal, not with a forum post.

What a formal import file must contain

  • The consignee's RFC and registration in the padrón de importadores, per SAT
  • Commercial invoice (factura comercial)
  • Bill of lading or air waybill
  • Packing list
  • T-MEC (USMCA) certification where origin is claimed
  • NOM certificates or import permits where required

Courier parcels from the United States move under ANAM's mensajería y paquetería regime, where global rates of 17% and 19% apply to parcels from the US. Value tiers change, so confirm the current ones with ANAM or a licensed agente aduanal before you ship.

⚠️

Permits stop clocks dead

COFEPRIS, SENASICA and SEMARNAT may require import permits depending on the tariff classification. Food, cosmetics, medical devices, plants, wood packaging and chemicals are the usual triggers. Also note: in Mexico, cargo at a bonded CFS stays under customs control until the pedimento clears. For a parallel courier compliance checklist, read our USA to Central America International Courier: Customs Requirements & Compliance Guide.

How Do DDP, DAP, EXW and FOB Change Delivery Time?

Quick Answer: Incoterms decide who files the pedimento, and that decides who waits. Who clears and pays depends on the term and your contract, so confirm it with a licensed customs agent before shipping. When the buyer files its own pedimento, the import VAT on the buyer's pedimento can be credited by the importer.

Incoterm 2020Who books freightWho files the pedimentoWho pays duties and taxes
EXWBuyerBuyerBuyer
FOBBuyerBuyerBuyer
CIFSeller to portBuyerBuyer
DAPSellerBuyerBuyer (VAT creditable)
DDPSellerSellerSeller

The DDP trap

DDP looks fast on paper because the buyer does nothing. In practice it puts the US seller on the hook for Mexican import-side compliance — the RFC, the padrón, the classification. Worse, the buyer loses the VAT credit. Under the Ley del Impuesto al Valor Agregado, import VAT paid on the buyer's own pedimento can be credited by the importer.

The EXW trap

EXW reverses the problem. The buyer controls everything, which sounds efficient. But many foreign buyers have no US export handling in place. The cargo then sits in a warehouse for days waiting on a pickup nobody booked. On short lanes to Mexico, that delay can exceed the ocean transit itself.

USMCA origin is worth the paperwork

Per the International Trade Administration, US-originating goods imported with a pedimento can enter at 0% IGI when USMCA origin is certified. The certification must include the goods description and the 6-digit HS tariff classification.

Mexico classifies imports with an 8-digit fracción arancelaria plus a 2-digit NICO, whose first six digits are the HS code, declared on the pedimento. Wrong classification is the most common cause of a re-filed pedimento — and a re-filed pedimento is lost days.

Two costing notes. IGI is calculated on customs value: FOB price plus freight and insurance to the Mexican border or port, per the Ley Aduanera. The DTA for 2026 is MXN 461.61 per exempt operation, under the Ley Federal de Derechos as updated by the RMF (DOF 28-12-2025).

How Long Does Delivery Take by Mexican State and by Origin Country?

Quick Answer: After customs release, domestic delivery adds 1-2 days to Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, and 2-5 days to Mérida, Cancún, Tijuana and remote zones. Shipments from Asia and Europe run far longer than from the USA because the ocean leg is measured in weeks, not days.

DestinationDays after customs releaseService note
Mexico City (CDMX)1-2Daily coverage
Guadalajara1-2Daily coverage
Monterrey1-2Daily coverage
Querétaro1-2Bajío hub
Mérida2-4Longer inland leg
Cancún / Quintana Roo2-5Extended zone common
Tijuana / Baja California2-4Depends on entry point
Rural Chiapas / Oaxaca3-5Extended zone, reduced frequency
Baja California Sur3-5Extended zone, reduced frequency
Origin countryAir (days)Ocean (days)Usual entry point
USA3-77-29Manzanillo, Veracruz, Altamira
China5-918-30Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas
Spain4-820-30Veracruz, Altamira
Germany4-822-32Veracruz, Altamira
Japan5-920-30Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas
Colombia3-612-20Veracruz, Manzanillo

A shipment clearing in Manzanillo can arrive later than one clearing in Veracruz. That is inland distance, not customs. Manzanillo to Mexico City is a long haul; Veracruz is considerably closer to the capital.

Be realistic about coverage. Extended-zone destinations get served less often, so a 2-day commitment to CDMX is not a 2-day commitment to Tulum or La Paz. For a comparable LatAm transit breakdown in Spanish, see our guide ¿Cuánto tarda un envío a Colombia desde Estados Unidos?.

💡

Match your US gateway to your Mexican gateway

Choose the shorter total route, not just the cheaper ocean leg. If your final delivery is Guadalajara or Monterrey, a Los Angeles sailing into Manzanillo (7 days, September 2026) usually beats a Gulf routing. If your delivery is Puebla or Veracruz state, a Gulf port saves you inland days. Industry overviews such as International Shipping to Mexico | Trucking, Air & Sea Freight and How to Ship to Mexico confirm the same port-pairing logic.

What Does Speed Cost, and How Do You Get a Quote?

Quick Answer: Speed costs money per kilo, not per shipment. A 10 kg courier box door to door from the USA to Mexico started at $134 from Houston in September 2026, while ocean freight moves far more cargo for far less per kilo at 7-29 days. The calculator on this page prices your exact origin.

ModeSpeed rankCost per kiloWins when
Express courierFastestHighestSmall, urgent, door to door
Air freightFastHighOver 100 kg and urgent
Cross-border truckMediumMediumNorthern and central Mexico
Ocean LCLSlowLowUnder roughly 10 CBM
Ocean FCLSlowestLowestFull loads, vehicles, moves

Our September 2026 courier pricing, 10 kg door to door: from $134 (Houston), $138 (Miami), $138 (Los Angeles), $140 (New Jersey). Prices change every month, so use the self-updating price table on this page rather than these figures.

How to shorten the clock before you ship

  1. Match your commercial invoice values to what goes on the pedimento.
  2. Confirm the correct 8-digit fracción arancelaria plus NICO with your agente aduanal.
  3. Verify the consignee's RFC and padrón de importadores registration before departure, not after arrival.
  4. Prepare USMCA certification in advance if you are claiming 0% IGI on US-origin goods.
  5. Check whether COFEPRIS, SENASICA or SEMARNAT permits apply to your classification.
⚠️

Do not understate value

Understating declared value on a Mexican import to reduce duty is a customs offense under the Ley Aduanera (last reformed DOF 19-11-2025). SAT can also seize formally imported merchandise lacking a pedimento, even years later during an audit. The few dollars saved are never worth the exposure. For duty, tax and eligibility questions specific to your goods, consult a licensed agente aduanal.

$13410 kg courier box, Houston → Mexico, Sep 2026

That is door to door, our lowest listed US origin for a 10 kg parcel in September 2026. Ocean freight carries hundreds of times that weight for a fraction of the cost per kilo — but at 7 to 29 days port to port instead of 2 to 5. Choose by cargo value and deadline, not by headline price.

Some cargo we quote by hand rather than by calculator: project cargo, heavy machinery, oversized RoRo and dangerous goods. RVs, motorhomes, semi-trucks and aircraft do not fit in a container — they move on flat racks or RoRo vessels, and a specialist prices them after the form takes your request.

How long does a package take in customs in Mexico?+

It depends entirely on the file, not the carrier. Release follows the pedimento, the Mexican customs declaration completed under Annex 22 of the RGCE 2026 published by SAT, and ANAM runs the customs offices that process it. A shipment with a correct invoice, correct tariff classification and a consignee registered in the padrón de importadores clears far faster than one missing an RFC or a required permit.

How many days does DHL take to arrive in Mexico from the United States?+

Typically 2-5 business days door to door on express service from most US cities. That window covers pickup, the flight and final delivery, but it does not cover a customs hold. If Mexican customs selects the parcel for inspection or asks for a missing document, the carrier's clock stops until the file is corrected.

Why has my package been stuck in Mexican customs for weeks?+

Almost always a document or data problem, not a backlog. The common causes are an incomplete commercial invoice, a declared value that does not match the paperwork, a missing RFC or padrón de importadores registration, a wrong fracción arancelaria, or goods that need a COFEPRIS, SENASICA or SEMARNAT permit. Ask your agente aduanal exactly which field is holding the pedimento, then correct that field.

What is the fastest way to send a package to Mexico?+

Express courier door to door is the fastest, at 2-5 business days from most US origins. You make it faster by preparing the file before you ship: a complete commercial invoice, the correct 8-digit fracción arancelaria plus NICO, the consignee's RFC confirmed, and USMCA certification with the 6-digit HS code if you are claiming 0% IGI on US-origin goods.

How long does ocean freight from the USA to Mexico take?+

Between 7 and 29 days port to port, depending on which US gateway your cargo leaves from. Los Angeles is the shortest run to the Mexican Pacific, Miami and New Jersey sit in the middle, and Houston is the longest on our current schedules. LCL adds roughly 5-10 days for consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at a bonded CFS in Mexico, where the cargo stays under customs control until the pedimento clears.
